Back in the summer of 2016, I read what I believed to be the first trade in a run about Captain Marvel, but that turned out to be incorrect and Marvel had just been stupid in how they were rebranding and renumbering their comics. As I came to discover, the reason there was so little back story given about Carol Danvers, her powers and her role in the Avengers, is because despite being entitled Vol 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More, it was by no means the start of Kelly Sue DeConnick’s run. Rather let down by the experience, I put Captain […]

I’ve been waiting for the Captain Marvel movie since 2012! I read the first few volumes for a MOOC called “Gender Issues in Comics” which was presented on Canva by Christy Blanch. It was a wonderful course which jumpstarted my interest in superhero comics (particularly female superhero comics).  And I completely got why Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers changed the game for female comics readers.  So in anticipation of the new movie, I avoided all casting reveals and spoilers and revisited the first 3.5 volumes of the collected editions of DeConnick’s run on the series: Earth’s Mightiest Hero.  Full confession though: I stopped […]

Somewhat Marvelous

Ms. Marvel (Vol. 1) and Captain Marvel (Vol. 1) by G Willow Wilson and Kelly Sue Deconnick

August 18, 2017 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

It’s a little weird reading comics after so many years. I used to be an avid collector and dreamt of being an artist one day, until I figured out that I could get more entertainment for less money by reading novels. So I haven’t really read many comics in about 20 years. But I do miss the art. The art here by Adrian Alphona and David Lopez is pretty great, though very different, stylistically. Alphona is looser, less compact, which is actually perfect for the characters. Ms. Marvel is young and new, she’s just figuring out what her powers are. […]

Flerken Cat

Captain Marvel vol 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More and Vol 2: Stay Fly by Kelly Sue Deconnick

April 7, 2017 by vel veeter 3 Comments

I am reviewing a bunch of comics in the next few reviews because of biting off more than I now realize I can chew. See what happened was: Last year I got a copy of Nimona for Christmas, read it, liked it a lot, and then put it in my classroom library. A bunch of students borrowed it and read it and loved it. And even though I know next to nothing about comics and graphic novels, I get lots of questions about recommendations. So I am gonna hit up whatever I can find from the library during spring break and […]

Didn’t really see what the fuss is about

Captain Marvel, vol 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More by Kelly Sue DeConnick and David Lopez

July 10, 2016 by Malin 2 Comments

Carol Danvers, who is apparently a hot-shot pilot and one of the Avengers, lives in the crown of the Statue of Liberty (you can do that?) with her sister and niece. When the Avengers find an escape pod from a spaceship with an alien refugee inside it, they decide that Carol be the one to return the girl to her homeworld, as well as take up a more permanent presence in space as a representative for the Avengers Initiative. As she returns the girl to her home planet, she discovers that they are in dire need of help, as much […]

Goodbye, Kelly Sue. We hardly knew ye.

Captain Marvel, Vol. 3: Alis Volat Propriis by Kelly Sue DeConnick & David López

December 29, 2015 by narfna Leave a Comment

In case you’re curious, and too lazy to Google it, “Alis Volat Propriis” is Latin for “she flies with her own wings.” I think that’s lovely. It’s a lovely phrase, and it’s a lovely sentiment to end Kelly Sue DeConnick’s run on Captain Marvel. That said, man, I’m just not thrilled with the way this whole thing has turned out. I read Higher, Further, Faster, More earlier this year, and absolutely fell in love with it, and with Carol Danvers. Everything that has come after that first issue has been a letdown for me. Too silly. Stories too unconnected. Maybe […]

Hard to track down Captain Marvel/Avengers crossover.

Avengers: The Enemy Within (Avengers Assemble Vol. 2, #3; Captain Marvel Vol. 7, #3) by Kelly Sue DeConnick

August 18, 2015 by narfna Leave a Comment

Guys, I waited sooooo long to read this. I originally put it on hold at my library SIX MONTHS AGO. It was “on order” for five of those months. I waited so patiently. And then one day I got an email from my library informing me my hold had been canceled, because they couldn’t find a copy of the book to buy for the library’s collection. BOOOOOO. Hisssssss. So I ordered it through interlibrary loan and waited another month. And then it arrived! There was much rejoicing. And it ’twas good. This book concludes the initial run of Kelly Sue […]

Great book ruined by atrocious art.

Captain Marvel, Vol. 2: Down by Kelly Sue DeConnick

July 27, 2015 by narfna Leave a Comment

Cognitive dissonance is balls. So, look. I love Kelly Sue DeConnick’s writing. I love Carol Danvers. In general, I am a huge fan of everything that is going down in this book. BUT THE ART WAS SO DISTRACTING AND I HATED IT. The first two issues were okay. Dexter Soy continued his run from the first volume. And while I’m not a fan of his art, either, at least he manages to draw people that look like actual people. Starting at issue #9, Filipe Andrade takes over, and while there’s a certain beauty to his art, it is not the […]
