The book,"A Master of Djinn" by P. Djeli Clark, standing next to a book bingo card

“The three of them sat there – a Ministry agent, a half-djinn, and a cat (likely), staring out past the balcony to the sleeping city they somehow had to find a way to save.”

CBR14 Bingo: “Snake” – A character lies to a partner for fear of reprisal.  The same charac ter under goes physical transformation due to heritage and the gifts of a goddess, which includes healing. An alternate 1912 Cairo with lady investigators and magic?  Yes, please!  40 years previous magic was reintroduced to the world and djinn were released by the magician, al’Jahiz.  After a fraught time, djinn were integrated into Egyptian society.  They have since used their abilities to bring wonderous, magical and mechanical inventions […]

The Japanese manga, "Witch Hat Atelier" volume one next to a book bingo card.

Beautiful illustrations and engaging start to a magical manga: CBR14 Bingo “Rec’d”

Witch Hat Atelier, volume one by Kamome Shirahama

CBR14 Bingo: “Rec’d” – This book was recommended by Darcy, one of my favorite booksellers at Mysterious Galaxy bookstore. My favorite independent bookstore is also doing book bingo this summer.  With Witch Hat Atelier I was able to cross off a bingo square about recommendations on both my Cannonball Bingo (Rec’d) and Mysterious Galaxy’s (Staff pick) bingo cards.  Happily that was the last square I needed to complete a Mysterious Galaxy bingo and now I get a 20% discount on a book at the store! […]

Satisfying conclusion to fun fantasy trilogy – CBR14 Bingo: Shadow

Siege of Rage and Ruin: Wells of Sorcery Book Three by Django Wexler

August 7, 2022 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

CBR14 Bingo: “Shadow” – One of the wells of sorcery is Shadow, gifting the user with the ability to switch places with their shadow and move between shadows. Siege of Rage and Ruin is the conclusion to Wexler’s “Wells of Sorcery” trilogy that started with Ship of Smoke and Steel, and was followed up by City of Stone and Silence. Isoka’s plan is simple.  Sneak ashore outside Kahnzoka’s harbor.  Hitch a ride with a merchant traveling to the city.  Get to her sister Tori and slip […]

Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins Library Edition Series I & II Collection by Matthew Mercer

August 3, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I only know the TV series of Vox Machina so my feelings are from hat incarnation of everything (and by everything, I mean the D&D game it is based on, the videos, and anything online or other book formats). The creators of this collection are Matthew Mercer, Jody Houser, Matthew Colville, Olivia Samson, and Chris Northrop. Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins Library Edition Series I & II Collection is a collection has the gang to be known as Vox Machina before they were The Gang. […]

Grown-ass Ladies With Superpowers

The Change by Kirsten Miller

August 1, 2022 by MG Dietzel 2 Comments

Bingo square – MONSTER – there are evil monstrous men in this book The Change by Kirsten Miller was one of those books that I got a reader copy of on a whim and then ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting. It is a pulpy fun feminist revenge fantasy that will give you strong Witches of Eastwick vibes (sans the devil himself, but featuring some truly horrible men). It has a great premise–what if menopause didn’t just suck, but instead gave you […]

The book, "City of Stone and Silence" by Django Wexler standing next to a book bingo card.

Two sisters, two different powers, trying to reunite against all odds- CBR14 Bingo: Monster

City of Stone and Silence: The Wells of Sorcery Book Two by Django Wexler

July 26, 2022 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

CBR14 Bingo: “Monster” – Tori begins a slippery slope of abusing her mental powers and starts self-describing as a monster. The first book in the Wells of Sorcery trilogy, Ship of Smoke and Steel, was exclusively from Isoka’s point of view.  City of Stone and Silence switches things up by alternating between Isoka and her younger sister Tori. Having survived the voyage aboard Soliton, Isoka faces new challenges.  All aboard the ship have been forced off of it by the angel enforcers onto a mysterious island.  The […]
