Doing everything I can to complete my double Cannonball

King Baby by Kate Beaton

December 27, 2020 by Malin 10 Comments

See, some people might accuse me of desperation at this point, reviewing a 32-page children’s book I’ve read to my son more times than I can consciously count, considering he’s now nearly three, and my husband and I started reading it to him when he was only just a baby himself, long before he had any grasp of what the book was actually about or what the illustrations showed. Those people might not be entirely wrong. I have, however,  come to the conclusion that due […]

23: Step Aside, Pops

Step Aside, Pops by Kate Beaton

April 1, 2018 by bonnie Leave a Comment

What is better than Hark! A Vagrant? Why, a second collection of Kate Beaton comics, of course! There isn’t a whole lot to say that would be new from the first collection, but I am going to try my best. Forgive any squeeing I might do, because words don’t do this collection justice. Beaton knows her audience well, and the hits keep coming. Bronte jokes, peasant jokes, revolutionaries, and feminist/suffragette panels abound. Beaton revives her Nancy Drew cover panels, which delighted me to no end. […]

22: Hark! A Vagrant

Hark! A Vagrant by Kate Beaton

April 1, 2018 by bonnie Leave a Comment

I’ve seen Kate Beaton comics throughout the internet before, and I’ve greatly enjoyed them. On my library display, someone had emblazoned Hark! A Vagrant and Step Aside, Pops, so I thought I could use a little literary nerdy fun in my life. It’s clear that Beaton put her history degree and art/museum acumen to good use in her comics, and we are all the better for it. Beaton gets me. There’s just no other way to say it. She makes bountiful history jokes, literary panels, […]

She had me at Anne Bronte saying “dickbags.”

Hark! A Vagrant by Kate Beaton

April 16, 2017 by scootsa1000 2 Comments

This past week was our Spring Break, and we didn’t go anywhere. So, I spent some time attempting to finish all of the books sitting around the house that I had gotten halfway through. It turns out that there were more than I thought. I got through six, but that wasn’t all of them. As you might imagine, my thoughts are a bit discombobulated…trying to remember which book had annoying New York helicopter parents, and which had an alien race of teenage girls…but this one was easy to […]

The Picture Version of Texts With Jane Eyre

Hark! A Vagrant by Kate Beaton

August 8, 2016 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

I’m glad I lent crystalclear the Hamilton book when I had it out from the library, or I’d feel in real friend debt, since she has been lending me books all year. This is another delivery from her, and it served as a palate cleanser between Children of God, When a Scot Ties the Knot, and The House of the Spirits. Yes, I have weird reading habits, Casino Royale was in there too for a short time. I feel this book works best in that […]

A delightful little picture book

The Princess and the Pony by Kate Beaton

December 26, 2015 by Malin 2 Comments

Princess Pinecone wants to be a warrior and get cool trophies or weapons, but instead she tends to get big fuzzy sweaters. For her birthday this year, what she wants the more than anything is a horse. A big, brave, strong horse. A warrior horse, fit for the warrior princess that she is. Her parents really do try, but instead, she gets a pony. A little round, yellow pony who likes to eat pretty much everything and fart a lot. Princess Pinecone valiantly tries to […]
