The Big Cheese is a Big Wheel

The Big Cheese by Jory John

August 18, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There is a new Jory John and Pete Oswald book coming out in early November 2023. And it is a big deal. In fact, you could say it is a big wheel called The Big Cheese. Starting back in 2017 withThe Bad Seed, the themes of the Food Group books are lessons for everyone about personalities, emotions, social themes, and more. When we meet Cheese they are a big deal. They tell us they started life normal enough, but had big plans. And they achieved them. And […]

You’ll be smarter than a cookie

The Smart Cookie (Food Group) by Jory John

November 26, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Smart Cookie (Food Group) by Jory John is not my favorite of the Food Books they and Pete Oswald created. With that said, there is nothing wrong with this picture book, I just feel that like, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie series, we have gone to the bakery one too many times. Yet, the story of being yourself, and finding your own way of being creative or clever, is nicely illustrated by Oswald’s fun, silly, colorful, detailed illustrations. The cover tells you […]

One not so little pug named Pig, is a greedy pup. It is Halloween and all he wants to do is to not only get the treats but to get the right treats. And then Pig wants to eat the treats! And if you are stingy with treats, you will smell more than his feet in Pig the Monster (Pig the Pug) by Aaron Blabey. Of course, Pig earns that a dog should not eat a lot of chocolate (after all it can make you, […]

This Book Will Get You to Sleep by Jory John

I am the Storm by Jane Yolen

September 24, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Two picture books that could not be more different are the subjects of this review. If you have a more lighthearted need, you can read This Book Will Get You to Sleep. And if you are looking for a more calm and deeper book, try I am the Storm. Both are good books but have a different niche to fill. This book will either put you to sleep or keep you awake. However, since This Book Will Get You to Sleep! is busy, filled with […]

Something’s Wrong!: A Bear, a Hare, and Some Underwear by Jory John

March 26, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Perhaps Something’s Wrong!: A Bear, a Hare, and Some Underwear is more of a 2.5 than a solid two, as the ending does have a slight twist one does not necessarily see coming and it was amusing. However, the ending was also flawed for me. Bear leaves home thinking they have forgotten something in Jory John’s picture book. They just cannot put their finger on it. Bear travels the forest, meeting friends, and is nervous about the thing he forgot; the thing that is “wrong” […]

We all have jitters

First Day Critter Jitters by Jory John

January 22, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It will be the first day of school soon and the critter students all have the jitters (hence why the book is called First Day Critter Jitters). Sloth worries he is too slow, Snake cannot get his backpack on his body, Bunny has a lot of energy and worries they will not be able to hop around. Everyone has a special issue that is related to their animal type. But they are all real fears and worries children have. When they finally get to school, […]
