One Sweet Song by Jyoti Rajan Gopal

American Desi by Jyoti Rajan Gopal

March 20, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport author   The funny thing is, “sweet” does not always do it for me (unless it is a donut or chocolate). However, once in awhile a book that is sweet gets me in the feels. That is because it is sweet but not overly, sickening sweet (like three York peppermint patties and a mug of hot chocolate). And One Sweet Song falls in the former sweet category. Rhyming text takes us through a neighborhood when one person, while sitting on a balcony, plays a […]

Adaptations of Classic tales

A Taste of Honey: Kamala Outsmarts the Seven Thieves ( by Rebecca Sheir

The Tale of the Unwelcome Guest: Nasruddin Teaches the Town a Lesson by Rebecca Sheir

December 16, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A few reviews back I wrote about another A Circle Round Book by Rebecca Sheir. Each one has been illustrated by different people. Therefore, that change might help you enjoy one over the other. But also, the flow and tone of the story is slightly different and that can help one’s enjoyment of them. The Great Ballgame was illustrated by Joshua Pawis-Steckley and is based on Native American mythology and culture. A Taste of Honey: Kamala Outsmarts the Seven Thieves (illustrated by Chaaya Prabhat) has […]

Making Space for Mistakes

How to Wear A Sari by Darshana Khiani Illustrations by Joanne Lew-Vriethoff

October 27, 2021 by NTE 1 Comment

I know literally zero things about Saris. I think they’re beautiful, and I admire their beauty from afar, but the closest I’ve ever gotten to one was my childhood best friend’s mother, who always looked gorgeous & ready for whatever kind of day she might encounter, when I would go to their house after school. Mistakes though? Trying something and messing it up? More than once? Sometimes in a really big & embarrassing way? Well I’m a professional at that, friends. And you all should […]

Cooking my way through this one

East by Meera Sodha

May 23, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I have started to really make an effort to cook my way through a cookbook before looking for a new one; problem is, the cookbook I had planned to start the year with turns out to not be much to my taste. Library browse to the rescue, I think. I picked up East by Meera Sodha, which features both vegan and vegetarian which isn’t a mix you usually see. It focuses on Asia in general, but with a mix of Japanese, Indian, and Chinese cuisines […]
