wasp factory cover

A thoroughly enjoyable disturbing novel!

December 31, 2014 by AamilTheCamel Leave a Comment

Fifty-first book reviewed as part of the 130 Challenge. This book is not for the faint-hearted. It isn’t for those who can’t stand gore and animal cruelty and the death of children. But in its own way, this is one of the best books I have ever read. This is the story of Frank, a 16 year old living with his Father on an island. His brother, Eric, has just escaped from a mental asylum and for the major part of the book, Frank is […]

The millionth review of this book (which is wonderful).

December 30, 2014 by narfna 2 Comments

I think it’s probably impossible to read Amy Poehler’s book without comparing it, subconsciously at the very least, with Tina Fey’s Bossypants (and possibly Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?). Bossypants was certainly on my mind, not just because when I think of Amy Poehler, Tina Fey isn’t far behind (and vice versa), but also because both women (and Mindy Kaling) are associated in my mind with being funny on Thursday night NBC sitcoms. They’ve also all three got that ethos about them. The […]

Inside the mind of a dull guy.

December 30, 2014 by AamilTheCamel Leave a Comment

Forty-ninth book reviewed as part of the 130 Challenge. I wanted to read this book because I was curious about the way Yoga fits into this story. I also believed that writing a funny novel about Yoga must be terribly difficult and since Jackson Radcliffe had taken this up, it must make for an interesting read. Jackson has written a 300 page story that revolves around the life of a really dull man named Dave who is seeking an escape from his dreary existence while he […]

I read this book because I am very slowly working my way through all the books that have won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Dunces won in 1980. There is a certain anticipation when starting an award winning novel. I wonder  “What is so special about this work? Why did it win?” I wonder if I am up for the challenge, if I can do the work justice as a reader. I didn’t know what I was getting into. The beginning of Dunces is rollicking and […]

The anarchist’s wet dream!

December 29, 2014 by AamilTheCamel Leave a Comment

Forty-third book reviewed as part of the 130 Challenge. How would you like a ball busting, head chopping, tank driving bitchy diva who has serious fun while doing it all? Bring it on, I hear you say? Well, that and a lot, lot more than that is what Tank girl is all about. Tank Girl is an outlaw living in the Australian Outback who hangs out with her boyfriend, a mutant Kangaroo; her best friend, a junkie Aborigine; a stuffed toy Koala bear who hasn’t come […]

The new king of the dads has risen.

My daughter can’t even read and she loves this book.  She says it’s about mommies, which is amazingly on point, since I haven’t read any of it to her. I also feel I should point out that the color scheme is the same as my old Livejournal.
