This feels like a bait and switch

The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang

January 10, 2024 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Damnit, Helen Hoang. You lulled me in with the first two books, only to gut punch me with this one. It got pretty real in The Bride Test, as evidenced by my review of that one, but this one was more feels than romance. I guess it makes sense, considering she mentions in the post-script that it was part memoir. I only wish I had read that prior to reading the book. Having dealt with my share of burnout (pick your flavor, autistic or ADHD, or both), […]

Didn’t expect to find myself looking in the mirror…

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang

Now this is more what I was after with the first book. While it remains plenty spicy, the story doesn’t take a backseat to it all this time. And though there are still some moments that had me questioning what the fresh hell I was reading (for example, Khai wakes up with morning wood every day, so he thinks that means jerking it in the shower is a necessity to the point that he gets frustrated it makes his days less efficient), there were fewer […]

Suffice it to say, I prefer my smut to not be a surprise

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

January 3, 2024 by Travis_J_Smith 5 Comments

The Kiss Quotient is a book that had come to my attention multiple times in the past, but which I’d passed on each time for one reason or another. Though, after looking up recommendations for books relating to autism specifically, and seeing it pop up time and time again, I moved it to the top of my list and splurged on all three books in the series. Having now finished the first of the three books, I’m wondering if I may have been a bit […]

The Heart Principle grabbed mine and didn’t let go

The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang

December 29, 2022 by teresaelectro 4 Comments

Helen Hoang’s The Heart Principle was everything I wanted and more. Our heroine Anna Sun is going through it. She is a violinist stuck in a loop after a performance video goes viral on YouTube. With every practice session, she wants to replicate that moment with precision. She ends up burned out and unable to finish the song. She is attempting therapy to find a breakthrough. Later that day, her boyfriend asks to “see other people” as an excuse to know that he’s ready to […]

The Heart Principle

The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang

Trigger warning: Suicide ideation What a lovely book. I have really enjoyed all of the books in this series, and this one is probably my favorite. I know that some readers were not happy with this because it was “too serious” and not a romantic comedy like they were expecting. But honestly, we get some very “fire” sex scenes, so I was fine with this book being more open about the main character’s Asperger’s diagnosis and the burnout that she was feeling and how dark […]
