Take me to Sugar Town

Sugar Town by Hazel Newlevant

April 1, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I can’t give Sugar Town by Hazel Newlevant a pure four, but my feelings and likes make things  closer to a four than a three. The nice thing about the book is that each reader can find what they are looking for within the stories. Sometimes I like our characters, sometimes not. Would I be friends with them? Probably not, but I think we could be good acquaintances. I like the look into Hazel’s world. The mixture of events shows a good look into human […]

Cleaning up the forest and your thoughts

No Ivy League by Hazel Newlevant

January 17, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

No Ivy League by Hazel Newlevant was not what I expected from what I had read about it and the cover. Hazel’s story is a coming of age story, which is not a new theme. However, the way Newlevant presents it feels fresh. The graphic novel has an odd cover look to it. First it looks like it is going to be about a middle schooler or young highschooler, but for the middle school age. But then it looks more teen and for the 15 […]

Summer Days…of privilege, learning, and growth

No Ivy League by Hazel Newlevant

December 17, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I really want to be the kind of person that listens to NPR. It’s an elusive goal of mine that remains so, I have tried and I just can’t do it. I tell myself it’s because I can’t stand starting in the middle of something, so jumping to that dial on my commute is an ill prospect but I’m grasping at straws. I just have come to understand that I’m not that kind of grown up. However, my husband is a big fan, so legally […]

Not what I was expecting

No Ivy League by Hazel Newlevant

October 16, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

This… was not what I was expecting.  With a title like this, I was assuming this was going to involve prestigious colleges.  Not even close. I picked this ARC up at BookCon this year. I went to the publisher, Lion Forge, because I wanted to get a ticket for Mooncakes the next day.  (Which I got. Woohoo!) They still had tickets for this, so I figured, “Why not?” This is a graphic novel memoir about a summer in the life of author Hazel Newlevant.  She […]
