Aussie Comedian Memoir Double Feature

Ten Steps to Nanette by Hannah Gadsby

May 18, 2022 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

I just finished reading two memoirs by Australian comedians concurrently: Hannah Gadsby’s ‘Ten Steps to Nanette’ and ‘Challenge Accepted’ by Celeste Barber. The parallels and differences between each were, in a word, fascinating, so that is why I am reviewing both together. Gadsby’s tone throughout was dire. She recounted the damage and traumas she’s endured over a lifetime – from her sexuality, her neural diversity, her physical appearance, and her family relationships… she has been through the ringer. She is diagnosed as autistic, has been […]

Exactly What I Should Have Expected

Ten Steps to Nanette by Hannah Gadsby

May 3, 2022 by ASKReviews 2 Comments

Best for: People who like memoirs, especially ones that go in unexpected places. In a nutshell: Comedian Hannah Gadsby tells of her life growing up in Tasmania, her career in comedy, and how she built her one-of-a-kind show Nanette. Worth quoting: “The lies of a vulnerable minority should never have been put into the hands of the majority in a media landscape that is all too happy to be powered by the fumes of a toxic debate.” “I find joy in my life where I […]

Ten Steps to Nanette: A Memoir Situation by Hannah Gadsby

I feel like this is going to be a tough one for me to review, because my relationship with the content that Hannah Gadsby creates is so personal to me and has been frankly crucial to how I am coming to understand myself that it’s a bit difficult to try to take that out of the equation and look at Ten Steps to Nanette on its own. I’ve likely watched Nanette half a dozen times in the past couple of years (and once again in […]

I took everything I knew about comedy, then I pulled it all apart and built a monster out of its corpse.

Ten Steps to Nanette by Hannah Gadsby

Nothing I say in this review is going to adequately express how generally good this book is because I keep wallowing in the ways it is impacting me personally. It is very good and I think a lot of people should read it. Especially now when there is a rising focus on driving LGBTQ+ folks further into the margins and erasing them from the present. Hannah Gadsby’s Ten Steps to Nanette has laid me out flat. Before flattening me, it knocked me for a loop, […]
