Flipping Forward Twisting Backward by Alma Fullerton

June 28, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I say Flipping Forward Twisting Backward by Alma Fullerton has a classic feeling story with a little bite, I mean the story might feel a bit “old hat” in today’s themes that are a bit more mature, or “updated.” What I mean is that this book feels like something I would have read from ages (at least 8) to a (younger) 12.  And when I was growing up, there were the Big Four Themes. June already? Sheesh. The Brass Verdict**** Ever since John Grisham lost his fastball in the late-90s, I’ve mostly forsaken legal thrillers. But I like the Bosch series and I wanted to read something LA-based and this delivered. It’s a fun plot with some legit exciting twists. Will probably go back to it at some point or maybe watch the show. Interior Chinatown*** I wish I liked this one more than I did. The satire is razor sharp, the story is deep and the pain is […]

Books to buy with gift cards: Picture books

Flying High: The Story of Gymnastics Champion Simone by Michelle Meadows

Simon at the Art Museum by Christina Soontornvat

December 24, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I would say these two books would be great Holiday presents, and they are, but since it is December 24, they will not make it in time (unless your local independent together bookstore has them). Therefore, when you get your gift cards to that same store, you can go and look for them instead. Flying High: The Story of Gymnastics Champion Simone Biles by Michelle Meadows and Ebony Glenn doing illustrations.  The only reason I am giving this a four and not a five is […]

I’m a gym nerd, as we affectionately refer to ourselves on the gymternet. I have a tumblr appropriately full of tumbling gifs, a Patreon subscription to Lauren Hopkins’ Gymternet site, and a YouTube history full of old meets that I’ve watched a thousand times.
