“fear is an anchor, but it’s also a bridge”

The Haunting of Room 904 by Erika T. Wurth

March 19, 2025 by narfna 2 Comments

Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the contents of my review. I’m going to keep reading this author’s books as long as I like the premises, because she is improving as a writer as she goes. There are still things in here that ultimately meant I couldn’t bump this up to four stars (dear lord, the sex scene*) because this simply just isn’t as good as books that I have rated four stars in the past. But her ideas […]

The Undetectables by Courtney Smyth

March 13, 2025 by finnyfinfinn Leave a Comment

I would never regret dying in a cat costume. I am now actively plotting how I can do so. Should I dress like a cat all the time just in case?  Because I am totally willing to do that. The Undetectables came together when they were fourteen at the site of their first murder, that of Theodore Wyatt of the infamous cat costume. Six years later his murder is still unsolved and the girls have scattered. Mallory has been struggling with fibromyalgia, Diana is busy […]

Being the new kids in school isn’t their only issue

Glitch Volume 1 by Abigail Blackman, Eleanor Summers and Shima Shinya

March 6, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While cleaning up older links to online reader copies, I found one from 2023. How or why it was still active, I do not know (I have had ones from February 2025 that have already become inactive). Therefore, yes Glitch Volume 1 by Abigail Blackman, Eleanor Summers (translator) and Shima Shinya is available in a finished copy, as are the other (so far) three volumes in this series. I am not sure if there will be more, but I hope it is wrapped up in […]

Split between Fell New York, 1982 and Fell New York, 2017 the story follows two women (Viv in 1982 and Carly, Viv’s niece in 2017).  Viv goes missing in 1982, leaving Carly, the niece she never knew with a family mystery on her hands.  Carly goes to Fell in search of her aunt and takes a job working at the same Motel (the Sun Down Motel of the title) her aunt was at before she vanished.  She ends up working the same shift her aunt […]

The ghosts with the most

Gilbert and the Ghost  by Heather Pierce Stigall

February 13, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ghost stories are nice year round. Especially if they have a theme that is about something other than the greatest holiday ever, Halloween. The below books have ghosts in unique and fun ways.  I do not know why 632 Savannah Street is an important fact to have in the story of Gilbert and the Ghost by Heather Pierce Stigall  and illustrated by Jess Mason (due mid-August 2025, read via an online reader copy),  but I’m sure when you read it, you’ll figure out what I missed.  […]

It’s Always Darkest Before the Dawn

The Legacy of Arniston House by T.L. Huchu

January 4, 2025 by Pooja Leave a Comment

After defecting to English magic (and higher pay), ghost-talker Ropa is ready to pack up her grandmother and leave Edinburgh behind entirely. But as tensions mount in the city and a mysterious enemy becomes more visible, Ropa’s grandmother is murdered – and Ropa is considered the primary suspect. In the fourth book of the Edinburgh Nights series, author Huchu really begins to weave together the broader conflict brewing in the world of Scottish magic and Ropa’s personal journey, bringing to fruition many of the things […]
