When the Snow Whispers to you

October 17, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A Whisper in the Snow, due to some slightly choppy language, caused me to have to stop and start a few times. The text is rich, but I think it might have been translated. Therefore, making the (I am assuming German) original text to English not an easy transition for some people’s ears. This makes it only a rating of 4.5. This is because of two main points. The first is that Ferdun Oral’s illustrations are amazingly fabulous pieces of art. They are items that […]

What we imagine is not always true but usually the reality is better

October 15, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Zola’s Elephant is one of those books that should have its own rating system. Maybe it is an apple. I like apples, but I prefer grapes. The story is three and a half apples while the illustrations are four apples. I like Zola’s Elephant, but I think I prefer other treats more. The story has the usual feel of being classic, modern, European and American all at once. It has no real time frame of when it is set but has a very “today” feel […]

Future publication that you should know about now

October 11, 2018 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

Kiss Number 8 is a graphic novel that will not be coming out until March of next year, but really deserves a lot of press beforehand. Like Check, Please! Hockey by Ngozi Ukazu (previously reviewed here and currently out) Colleen AF Venable does not shy away from some tough issues. However, unlike Ukazu there is less humor. Warning: to best show you this book there are a lot of spoilers below. Therefore, I will say here, this is a great book, but will not be […]

Elmore, a warmhearted porcupine who’s desperate to make friends….does!

September 17, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Elmore is the latest gem by the Toot and Puddle creator, Holly Hobbie. Elmore is a loveably prickly porcupine with a big prickly problem. His quills. How can Elmore find a way to make friends when nobody wants to get near him due to the fact he will poke them with those same said quills? He cannot help it, he is a porcupine after all.   Over all this is a sweet story about a porcupine trying to make friends and the ups and downs […]

Find your inner superheroine

September 16, 2018 by Malin 2 Comments

SPOILER WARNING! As I’m reviewing all three books in a trilogy, it’s going to be difficult for me to discuss the books without minor spoilers, especially in books 2 and 3, as they naturally follow on from and develop stuff that’s gone before in the series. So if you want to approach this series entirely spoiler free – you may just want to read the synopsis for book 1. #CBR10Bingo: Heroine Complex: So it begins Heroine Complex – 4.5 stars Evie Tanaka is the long-suffering and ever patient personal assistant […]

Adrian Simcox Does Not Have a Horse or does he?

September 14, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Adrian Simcox Does Not Have a Horse by Marcy Campbell has some interesting elements. It is a softer version (text and illustration wise) of Enemy Pie by Derek Munson. Chloe, the narrator of our story knows that Adrian cannot have a horse. Why? Because he cannot have a horse in town. Or in his small house. Or the fact it takes a lot of money to take care of a horse and he has raggedy clothing. It is not until her mother gives her a […]
