October 21, 2021 by Malin 1 Comment

3.5 stars CBR13 Bingo: Travel Official book description: Two best friends. Ten summer trips. One last chance to fall in love. Poppy and Alex. Alex and Poppy. They have nothing in common. She’s a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book. Scars have stories

These Precious Scars by Emily Suvada

October 15, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was reading on my delightful free Simon & Schuster account (which I recommend if you can read a book in a months’ time as they are only there for the month.  But you also get snippets of other books, and when sign up a free book of choice. I did (surprise) the young adult root but picked an adult book to read), and I came across These Precious Scars which I did not realize was not a “normal” book situation. First, it is part […]

You don’t need a little orange book to be prepared for this book

Worst-Case Collin by Rebecca Caprara

October 13, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The prose poetry allows Worst-Case Collin by Rebecca Caprara to be a quick read, but without sacrificing the story. In the tone and style of Love that Dog and Hate that Cat, Caprara created a book that is both familiar in the subjects presented (growing up, bullies, the loss of a parent, friendship, mental health issues) and different (the father’s particular mental health issues). While I felt the ending was a bit forced, it also was the only way to do it. The realism of […]

Sequel as good as the first if not better

Witches of Brooklyn: What the Hex?! (A Graphic Novel) by Sophie Escabasse

October 13, 2021 by BlackRaven 4 Comments

Witches of Brooklyn: What the Hex?! (A Graphic Novel) by Sophie Escabasse is the sequel to the Witches of Brooklyn Volume one. This is a delightful little story that flows well. For the adult reader, it is easy and will take no time to read. Yet, the ages 8 to 13 will be the perfect group to savor every piece. This story is a familiar one about friends and envy, but with the addition of fun, kooky aunts, their equally fun, kooky friends, an oddball pet, […]

Meaning of Treasure

Treasure in the Lake by Jason Pamment

October 13, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Treasure in the Lake has a pleasant look with the cool water and two adventurers on the cover. The contrast of light and dark hints at a deep mystery. But Jason Pamment fell short for me with the actual story. The cover was the draw and the story, well, only hides an abandoned village and not the wild ride I thought might be inside. All points I give this book come from the artwork. The story was weak and had several holes. The dual story […]

Expectations and Reality clash and have a lovely time

Princess Princess Ever After by Kay O’Neill

October 13, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

All points/rating for this book, Princess Princess Ever After comes from the lovely, classical folktale illustrations that Kay O’Neill gave us. This modern twist of Prince saving the Princess has been seen before, (this time we have a Princess saving the Princess). But this time O’Neill also tosses in a prince who has a little side story (which is not really needed, or at least could have been expanded a bit Perhaps he’ll get his own story someday?). However, it is still about expectations and […]
