“Fear is Power”

November 28, 2018 by Mrs Smith Reads Leave a Comment

I did not like reading Fear by Bob Woodward, and I suspect that no one else has either. I can’t say that I learned anything new about the Trump presidency—though my worst fears were confirmed. Trump is not smart. He is not thoughtful. He has no human emotions beyond greed and contempt. Trump is lazy and vengeful. The only *facts* Trump knows are the ones he makes up in his head. Trump’s administration are frankly more evil than Trump himself. Despite their belief that they are “protecting” the […]

The Book Sensation That’s Sweeping The Nation!

September 12, 2018 by Jake Leave a Comment

Disclaimer: I don’t know what the political boundaries are for this website, i.e. what’s appropriate to talk about and what’s not. I’m a bleeding heart liberal who makes other bleeding heart liberals look like Birchers. I also bear the scars of many a social media fight over politics and have no desire to reopen wounds here. So I’ll be reviewing the quality of this book and what Woodward is saying in its context. Please do not take this as support of an administration I find […]

While I’ll miss them coming to my store, I did not miss their gem of a book!

September 11, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Good Rosie is the latest picture book by author Kate DiCamillo and illustrator Harry Bliss. It is an interesting take on a new situation scenario where the child (or in this case, dog) is lonely and would like to make friends but is nervous about making these new friends. This new situation could because the child/dog is going to a new school, it is their first day of school or they are going to the child/dog park.   While you can see the illustrations are […]

They think, therefore they ARRRR!!!!!

August 24, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Yo ho ho! And a bottle of Milk! Listen up you scurry mates! I have one whale of a tale to tell you about! When one tough pirate… bus driver… is all about how brrrave and strrrong pirrrates… I mean kinderrrgarteners are when they are off to their first day of school. That is, until his beloved parrot, Polly, flies off because of stormy seas…. Ah… bumpy roads. This leaves him to show that he might not be so brave himself after all. But with […]

What do you do with a book like Captain Starfish?

June 29, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sometimes when you find a rated three book it can be hard to write a review. “It is a nice book. It is pretty. You should read this book.” The end. However, with Captain Starfish there is more but how does one describe the fact that the classic feel of the illustrations sets the tone of the story? How do I say that the modern theme of overcoming fear has a slightly different take this time? Is it possible to say that this time the […]

I’m a Duck (Quack Quack)

April 4, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Am I the only one who thinks when they see the words, “I’m a Duck”, you have to follow it up with, “Quack. Quack”?  No? Just me? It is all good. But you now must read “I’m a Duck” by Eve Bunting and illustrated by Will Hillenbrand.  And even if you do not quack along, you will be rooting for the little duck in this story. One day, an egg rolled out of the nest and into a deep pond. This caused the egg, now […]
