Do Cryptozoologists make house calls?

Sorceline by Sylvia Douyé

May 19, 2022 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

I found a snippet of Sorceline and thought it sounded good. When I found it, it took me at least three tries to start. There were several, “Wait? Did I miss something?” moments before I was able to get into the flow. This is an odd little book. There were some storyline bumps that I thought were just me, but reviewers on Goodreads agreed. I think the issue for me is that Sylvia Douyé, graphic novel was translated. And my “reading ear” sometimes has trouble […]

Far from the Tree by Robin Benway

May 18, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

After finishing Far from the Tree, I told myself, “Well, that was a ride.” But was it a good or bad one? Yes. There were things I loved, and things I hated. Sometimes I thought the characters were amazing, sometimes horrible (really horrible, and not necessarily where you might think that yourself). They were real and they were stereotypes. They are good and they are bad. In other words, human. Robin Benway created a story of three biologically siblings (boy, girl, girl). And there are […]

The Castleton Massacre: Survivors’ Stories of the Killins Femicide by Sharon Anne Cook and Margaret Carson

May 16, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

In 1963, a former minister, long separated from his wife, went on a rampage and murdered four people, two of whom were pregnant. Now one of the survivors of the massacre and her cousin have put together the story of what happened. I have never heard of this case before, but picked up this book because of the identities of the authors – one is the niece of the murderer, and one the daughter of one of the victims, but they were raised together and […]

When I Was a Pirate by Tom Silson

May 13, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

You can take When I Was a Pirate with you can take this book with a shot of rum and coke and say it is a true whale of a tail. Or you can believe that the grandfather has had some far out times in his life.  I mean, does the grandfather in the story tell the truth? Was he a grand old pirate in his youth? (Tattoos seem to confirm this.) Or is he just diving deep into a bit of exaggeration?  I would […]

Vampire Vacation by Laura Lavoie

May 13, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Okay, I admit, Vampire Vacation is a little cheesy. But it is a fun and adorable cheesy! The idea of “trying something new” has been done before, but the twist is that this time Fang (a young, sassy vampire boy) wants his parents to try something new. Which is, not to take the same old family trip to Transylvania (even though the brochure promises it never gets old, Fang disagrees). Even with the several false starts in the attempts by Fang in Laura Lavoie’s picture […]

Lemonade Code by Jarod Pratt

May 11, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I really have no idea what I read in Lemonade Code by Jarod Pratt. At first, it seemed like it might be a funny story about a boy and girl (he a mad scientist; she his new perky neighbor with a big ol’ cat) and how they have lemonade stands that rival each other. There was the diverse cast which was a plus. I did not expect it to turn out to be a full on “kill or be killed” with nanobots, bullies and a […]
