So Much Plant Butt

April 2, 2018 by Halbs Leave a Comment

3.5/5 stars. The history and breadth of the collection is awesome – you get a lot of bang for the buck. The art is just so embarrassing to carry around I couldn’t give it four stars. That’s my review.  As I’ve posted on previous reviews of Ivy-centric books, I kind of fell in love with the morally ambiguous Ivy I first came across in the recent Batman video games. To learn more, I bought this book in the intriguing Batman Arkham series. In this newish series of […]

Who Knew Riddler Was an A-Lister?

March 11, 2018 by Halbs Leave a Comment

My favorite comic book store is Austin Books and Comics. They always give me interesting recs, and they’re the reason that I’ve been soaking in all the Tom King stories that I can lately. (Sorry for that, by the way! I usually try to mix up my reviews.) This book was pitched to me as making The Riddler a cool villain, and someone you should be scared of. It worked.  In this particular continuum, Bruce Wayne/Batman “like likes” Selina Kyle/Catwoman, but for their relationship to […]

“There’s not a choice…you just have to.”

March 10, 2018 by Halbs Leave a Comment

There’s a quote early in this book that perfectly summarizes my favorite version of Batman. Lucius Fox to Bruce Wayne: I once tried to talk your father into coming into the business. Told him being a doctor drives you crazy. Whatever you do, people just get sick again. You make no progress. He looked at me for a bit, got real quiet, stern almost. It’s a look I’ve only ever seen once again. And it was in the face of a masked man. Finally, in […]

A Superswing and a Supermiss

March 6, 2018 by Halbs 1 Comment

J. Michael Straczynski is a decorated comic writer and a personal favorite of mine. One of his original creations, Midnight Nation, was the comic that got me back into comics as an adult. I appreciated his thoughtfulness and insight into how people tick. I was excited when he got to co-write the story to the first Thor MCU movie, and I was a big fan of Superman: Earth One Vol. 1.   That book gave us a young Clark Kent, an outsider who wanted to do good but didn’t know […]

The Court of Owls? Who Gives a Hoot? Not Batman!

March 4, 2018 by Halbs 1 Comment

I’m a big Bat-fan. As I’ve written on here before, I came to the Caped Crusader via Batman: The Animated Series. Fox’ groundbreaking show elevated both the Bat and children’s cartoons to an unexpected level of prestige. This was thanks in large part to Andrea Romano’s voice casting and Bruce Timm’s art style, which more of less influenced DC’s animated shows for two decades. I dialed in my Bat-comic collection through garage sales, trial and error, and word of mouth. Dini is still one of my […]

Halbs Rambles About Poison Ivy

January 28, 2018 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Poison Ivy is a great example of a comic character that can change with the times. Initially, Ivy was a one-dimensional woman. She became this kind of floral sexpot, and a Halloween costume favorite. My understanding of the most recent DC lore is that Ivy is more of a benevolent eco warrior (terrorist?) interested in taking care of planet through whatever means necessary. She has also had a romantic relationship with Harley Quinn. (I got a little bit of that in Paul Dini’s Harley & […]
