Somehow, against all odds, this works!

Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass by Tamaki, Mariko

June 17, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Harley’s story is revamped to set her origin during her teen years, and by making this change, we get to enjoy her character without having to negotiate how she got to where she is. In Tamaki’s version, Harleen Quinn has always been something of an oddball and a screw-up with the best of intentions. Raised by a single mom, she takes on being the protector of her family sometimes, even if it lands her in juvie here and there. When she’s 16, her mom lands […]

So Much Plant Butt

3.5/5 stars. The history and breadth of the collection is awesome – you get a lot of bang for the buck. The art is just so embarrassing to carry around I couldn’t give it four stars. That’s my review.  As I’ve posted on previous reviews of Ivy-centric books, I kind of fell in love with the morally ambiguous Ivy I first came across in the recent Batman video games. To learn more, I bought this book in the intriguing Batman Arkham series. In this newish series of […]

Halbs Rambles About Poison Ivy

January 28, 2018 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Poison Ivy is a great example of a comic character that can change with the times. Initially, Ivy was a one-dimensional woman. She became this kind of floral sexpot, and a Halloween costume favorite. My understanding of the most recent DC lore is that Ivy is more of a benevolent eco warrior (terrorist?) interested in taking care of planet through whatever means necessary. She has also had a romantic relationship with Harley Quinn. (I got a little bit of that in Paul Dini’s Harley & […]

Is Poison Ivy a Good Guy or a Bad Guy? Yes.

November 30, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

I’m such a big, dumb Batman fan that I subscribe to several Bats-related subreddits and Pinterest boards. After playing Batman: Arkham Knight and enjoying its Poison Ivy storyline, I hit the internet boards to find recommendations for Poison Ivy-centric books. One recommendation was this short trade paperback from 1997. It is out of print, although I believe at least a portion of it is in the recently released Batman Arkham: Poison Ivy. Additionally, you can still find used copies of the book on Amazon. That’s […]

Great Harley and Ivy Stories, Non-Bus Friendly Art

August 17, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Harley and Ivy is a followup to Dini and Timm’s Mad Love, a Harley Quinn-centric collection I gave a hearty five stars to only a month ago. While Mad Love was about Harley and Joker, this book follows the hijinks of two of Batman’s more famous villains.  The main story in this collection is a fun around-the-world adventure in which Harley and Ivy cause trouble in Gotham, traipse through an exotic rain forest, and make their debuts in Hollywood. The varied settings provide opportunities for a […]

The Best of the Dini/Timm Batverse

July 3, 2017 by Halbs 2 Comments

Growing up, Batman was my guy thanks to Batman: The Animated Series. I loved the look and the mood of the show. Two guys largely responsible for that landmark show are writer Paul Dini and illustrator Bruce Timm. The third member of that B:TAS trinity is voice director Andrea Romano, who gave us our definitive Batman – Kevin Conroy. The success of the animated show translated well back into comics, many of which have been collected and reviewed by me in The Batman Adventures.  Dini […]
