Reasons why this is a cookbook not for me, at least not at this time

Good Things by Samin Nosrat

February 1, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Sometimes it’s pretty clear when a book is probably just fine, but maybe not for you, or at least you right now. Good Things by Samin Nosrat has some good things going for it. It’s got a lot of parts where there ar basically sets of theme and variation on a recipe or ingredient which can be nice when you’ve got a lot of something but don’t want to get bored. The premise of focusing on kind of simple pleasures is also something I can […]

So close but then nope

The Unofficial Harry Potter Vegan Cookbook by Imana Grashuis, Tylor Starr

January 1, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader 3 Comments

Have you ever read a book and started to appreciate it, only for one small detail to ruin the whole thing? When I picked up The Unofficial Harry Potter Vegan Cookbook, it was clearly stated that the book was in no way officially affiliated with the franchise and its author, so that didn’t bother me. The introduction is a little preachy about vegan ethics, but it’s by Evanna Lynch, the actress for Luna Lovegood. It’s nothing I haven’t seen before in vegan cookbooks. The thing […]

Not the right chemistry for me

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

September 1, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 12: School Some of the more significant moments especially towards the beginning of Lessons in Chemistry, as well as some later generally consistent episodes related to school work and learning put this one in the School spot. It’s no secret that being female in academia has been a challenge for a significant part of history, and Lessons in Chemistry starts with the worst parts of the 1950s-1960s horrific treatment of women in higher education (seriously, there should be a CW for the assault scene). […]

Yay carbs! and other things

Turnip Greens & Tortillas by Eddie Hernandez

May 11, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I had a feeling I may have read Turnip Greens & Tortillas at some point but I was browsing in the Library and they had a Cinco De Mayo shelf and I wasn’t sure. Having read the book, I’m still not sure. But I’m glad I picked it up, because it has a recipe I have been looking for: bolillos. I cannot find them anywhere close to where I live, and they are probably the best sandwich rolls for most all roll/sub type sandwiches like […]

Once Forgotten, but Should It Stay That Way?

Skinny Bitch in the Kitch by Rory Freedman, Kim Barnouin

March 9, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I was going through a shelf looking for a book, when I found a different book that I’d forgotten about. I kind of remember reading Skinny Bitch (basically an argument for eating vegan but feminist-ly) but apparently I’d forgotten I had the accompanying cookbook, Skinny Bitch in the Kitch. I must also have read this cookbook at some point, as every recipe has the US equivalent of the UK measurements the book uses added, in my handwriting. However, I am not sure I’ve ever actually […]

Understandable how you could mistake this knife fetishist for a murderer, but he didn’t do it.

Knife Skills for Beginners by Orlando Murrin

January 9, 2025 by narfna 2 Comments

Thanks to NetGalley, RBmedia, and Recorded Books for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the contents of my review. Yes, this book was written by a TV chef. Apparently he was on Masterchef—I’ve never seen it. But unless he used a very secret ghostwriter, he did a good job! I truly have no idea why the ratings for this book are so low coming out of the UK*, or why the cozy mystery people have not come flocking (though this isn’t a cozy, it does have […]
