“Everyone’s got a different story.”

I’ll start by saying I totally get the appeal of Room. The use of the unreliable narrator is particularly effective, creating a palpable dramatic irony and enhancing the reader’s apprehension by forcing us to fill in for ourselves all of the horrific details that our five-year-old narrator Jack does not, and cannot, understand about Room. I’m really digging deep into what I remember from high school English lit classes, but I digress. The point is that the exaggerated naivete of the narrator ratchets up tension […]

Being a fan of this series has become a moral dilemma

March 1, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 1 Comment

My relationship with this series had a good run of five books, but it seemingly ended and we went our separate ways. Now, it promises it has changed with a new perspective, so I was curious and checked the new installments out. I’m not really sure I’m feeling it, but I keep giving the new books the benefit of the doubt. There aren’t any red flags and they’re not irredeemable, so there must be no harm in continuing the series, but I still feel a […]

Sure. Fine. Whatever.

I don’t normally read contemporary YA, but I couldn’t resist the siren call of a story about confused and nerdy teenagers who were almost as obsessed with The X-Files as I was when I was a teenager. Going in, I was expecting Lula and Rory’s X-Files obsession to be more of a gimmick and that it wouldn’t be present in more than a cursory way, but I was so wrong. It plays an integral role in both Lula and Rory’s lives, and the book would […]

One of my favorite romance heroines

December 31, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

Bella was one of my favorite characters in earlier books, so I’m glad she got her own book. I feel like it’s rare to see such a sex-positive, confident, no apologies for being sexy kind of female character. Maybe I’m just reading the wrong books. It was great fun to see traditional romance tropes turned on their heads in The Shameless Hour. Bella, manager of the men’s hockey team, likes to sleep around and she doesn’t really give a shit what anyone says about it. […]

Of course I liked these Bowen romances, they’re Bowen romances

December 30, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

Blonde Date: I can’t deny that this was a pretty adorable aside in The Ivy Years series. I wasn’t going to bother with it because short stories and novellas aren’t really my thing, but I was convinced by all the people who loved it. Katie, a freshman, is still adjusting and trying to find a place to belong at college. She’s pledging a sorority and has dated a few athletes, but due to a humiliating experience with one of them, she’s feeling a little unsteady. […]

This wonderful romance is currently FREE

So many cannonballers have raved about this romance series that I had to see what all the fuss was about. So glad I gave it a chance! I’m picky about romance, especially contemporary novels, but Bowen is a thoughtful writer who quickly drew me into the relationship between Corey and Adam. It’s Corey’s first year at Harkness College (basically a stand-in for Yale or Harvard) and she’s still dealing with a hockey accident that left her paralyzed less than a year ago. She was supposed […]
