Once More for the People In the Back!

September 11, 2016 by Ellepkay 4 Comments

Add me to the chorus of people loving this book!  I reread passages as I went along, I’m already reread Beth Ellen’s copy that she lent me, I intend to buy a copy of my own,  AND I’ll probably pick up an ebook copy one day when it goes on sale.  I suspect this will be a comfort read for years to come. I can’t even properly write about this book.  I had a big smile plastered on my face the entire time I was […]

An American in Oxford

August 26, 2016 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

I found The Royal We excessively charming, for all that it is — as others have mentioned — Will and Kate Cambridge fanfiction. Every major player in their IRL romance has a direct analog here as far as I can tell (though I don’t truly consider myself an expert) and though our protagonist, Bex, is American, she still comes from money as Kate Middleton did. All of the major events in their romance are covered here, and, cover illustrations aside, even the physical descriptions of […]

Really Sweet M/M Romance Novella

August 7, 2016 by Ellepkay 2 Comments

This novella was absolutely charming!  Bryce and Clark were freshman college roommates and quickly became best friends.  They both had feelings for each other, but did not want to ruin their friendship, were dating other people, or living different places, so a romantic relationship never worked out.  They have been apart for 5 years, and Bryce has felt abandoned during that time. Clark shows back up in his life and Bryce doesn’t know how to feel about it.  Clark has to convince Bryce that they […]

Realistic (and slightly depressing) Hockey Romance

August 2, 2016 by Ellepkay 1 Comment

This is the second book in this series.  I liked the first one, but said that I wouldn’t seek out the others – except this one went on sale for $1, and that was good enough for me!  The big conflict in this one is probably the most realistic I have come across in a contemporary romance.  There’s no high drama or tragic backstory, just two people who connect, but are not sure how to make a relationship work. Scott Walters is a hockey player […]

How to Be Perfect

July 30, 2016 by Andrea Krieter Leave a Comment

Rating: 5/5 Summary: How can you be perfect? Grades, looks, image, career? For Cara, it’s perfect grades and perfect credentials, all to get into Stanford to appease her parents, especially after her brother Conner went over the deep end from the pressure. For Kendra, it’s looks. She knows she doesn’t have the same academic prowess as some of her peers so she must keep a perfect face. To reach her dreams of modeling she’ll do anything, including dieting, intense exercising and taking pills. Sean […]

Slow your roll, Nicholas Sparks

July 14, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 5 Comments

Lit fic as a category is pretty up its own ass, and many reviews for these books are also up their own asses, in a phlegmy, colonic matryoshka of sycophancy and intellectual pre-ejaculate. I don’t really care to participate in this shitfest, so instead, here’s a bulleted list of what worked and didn’t work about A Little Life. There be spoilers. This was fine * Yanagihara: “One of the things I wanted to do with this book was create a protagonist who never gets better.” […]
