Through the Woods by Emily Carroll; Margaret K McElderrly Books (2014)

My Kinda Horror

February 7, 2016 by KM Bezner Leave a Comment

I have a…complicated relationship with the horror genre. For most of my life, I avoided it entirely, more afraid of the fear and uncertainty that would come as a result of the scary thing than the scary thing itself. But I loved those books and movies that existed right on the edge of horror–Frankenstein and Dracula were just creepy enough to satisfy my desire for something mildly frightening, but weren’t so scary that I found it difficult to sleep at night. Through the Woods is something different. […]

The Colt 45 of Space Comics

February 7, 2016 by Halbs Leave a Comment

As previously mentioned in my Agent of the Empire reviews, I’m not much of a Star Wars guy, but I do enjoy the universe. It lends itself to telling all kinds of stories. For example, Agent of the Empire (Dark Horse) used a galaxy far, far away to tell James Bond stories well. Charles Soule’s (She-Hulk, Letter 44, Superman Wonderwoman etc. etc. etc.) Lando is another great example of how the larger Star Wars ‘verse can be used to tell smaller, genre-ish stories. This is […]

Her best travelogue yet.

February 3, 2016 by narfna 3 Comments

This light but still quietly devastating little travelogue might be the best thing Lucy Knisley has ever written. (Drawn? Created? Mixed media confuses word choice.) Her first two travelogues (French Milk and An Age of License) were explorations of her own maturation as she saw different parts of the world, but this one is on a whole other level. Her grandparents Allen and Phyllis are 93 and 90 years old respectively, and have signed up to go on a Caribbean cruise with a group from […]

Don’t let the colors fool you

February 2, 2016 by tillie Leave a Comment

ODY-C is based on Homer’s Odyssey in a world where Zeus has killed off most of the men. ODY-C is a genderbent interpretation that’s completely warped out of its own mind in a psychedelic sci-fi god-ruled outer space. I mean the whole thing is nuts. Crazy colors, and sexual innuendos all over the place; think women breaking down doors with giant phallos’ and vagina-like spaceships. But don’t let the colors fool you. This is not an explosion of a book, it’s a slow, heavy journey. […]

Proud member of the Carol Corps, checking in for duty, sir.

January 28, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

Okay, first of all I just want to say that Secret Wars seems like an unholy mess. I shouldn’t have to spend thirty minutes on Wikipedia reading up about a bunch of crazy shit just to enjoy my Carol Danvers, dammit. I mean, did ANYONE read all the Secret Wars stuff? If so, did you understand all of it? Because that page makes it sound terrible. As for the comic itself, once I got the gist of the background, it was actually pretty great! Basically […]

Kamala is my squishy muffin.

January 28, 2016 by narfna Leave a Comment

Five stars for the actual Ms. Marvel story included here, written by G. Willow Wilson and drawn in full by the lovely Adrian Alphona. Minus a full star because the last two issues in this volume are a Spider-Man/Ms. Marvel team-up, which was fun enough when Ms. Marvel was there and kind of boring when she wasn’t, but my biggest issue is that it’s totally jarring to read them after the other four issues in the book. I say it’s jarring because Last Days, while […]
