Do you ever lie awake at night and wonder what’s going on inside your stomach? Do you examine your poo before you flush? Do you know what tonsil stones are? Well, if you’re curious about any of the above, you should read Gut by Giulia Enders, because not only does she have answers, she also has a cheeky way of explaining how some parts of our bodies work that most of us just choose to ignore, because…. eeewwwwww. I made a conscious decision to stop reading *diet* […]
“We Aren’t the Masters of the Earth. We’re the Servants.”
I wanted to do a little more for the CBR Canada Day reads, but it just didn’t happen. So here, I thought why not cross off a CBR10 bingo square of reading a novel from my home country, but double down and make it related to the history of Canada as well: a historical fiction, but indeed related to missionary communities and tribal warfare in the early 17th century. The great thing about our local library is that all books by Canadian authors will have a […]
“Knowledge isn’t a sign of divine favor. Prosperity is.”
Bingo square: This is the End. Also I hit half a cannonball, yay! That was my goal so everything from here on in is extra. There will be some spoilers for the first book in here. Picking up where Six of Crows left off, Crooked Kingdom follows Kaz Brekker and his gang of ne’er-do-wells as they deal with the betrayal and fallout from their heist. Inej has been taken hostage and they don’t have the money promised them. They’re all a bit battered and exhausted but […]

Dreamy art plus a good science fiction story – not such a bad find
Happy QuarterCannonball to me! I was in the library to pick up a the ten ton Oathbringer, and happened across this graphic novel I had not heard of previously. In truth, it’s Colleen Doran’s name that caught my attention first – she is very talented, able to draw and paint in many different styles, and has interesting discussions about art and artists and women in the graphic novel business on Twitter. Warren Ellis of Transmetropolitan fame is good too, though. The foreword to the novel […]
I really dislike Peter now, FYI. #CBRBingo
Project: Catch Up On Review Backlog, review #5 out of 11 Glad to say I’m fully back on board with this series. I’ve decided to overlook its faults in favor of the things it does really well. I don’t think these same people in this same very small town are going to stop improbably encountering dead bodies anytime soon. And what it does really well is character. Penny’s characters are very human. The consensus for this one seems to be that it’s good, not great. […]
