About Carriejay

Many moons ago I took part in Cannonball Read II, under the name Teabelly. A lot has changed since then, and I now have two year old twin girls. I'm not getting as much reading done, but I'm hoping to make a half Cannonball at least.

“Maybe this was how adult friendships happened: by accident, embroidered over time, visible only from the height of years.”

Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts by Kate Racculia

December 13, 2020 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

Tuesday Mooney works as a researcher for a hospital fundraising department. She’s incredibly good at her job, and happy in her life, though she has few friends (apart from Dex, who seemingly needs her more than she needs him). One night at an auction event, Vincent Pryce (not that one), an eccentric billionaire, drops dead. He leaves behind clues to a possible fortune, and sends willing volunteers around the city on his treasure hunt. Tuesday and Dex are in immediately, but Tuesday is distracted by […]

“People value shiny stones and lucky charms, but they forget that the most powerful talismans of all are the stories that we tell to ourselves and to others.”

Bingo square: Shelfie In 1862, a group of artists gather at a manor house owned by one of their own, Edward Radcliffe, to spend the summer together creating. By the time their stay is over, a young woman is dead and another has disappeared, taking a priceless heirloom with her. In 2017, Elodie Winslow is working as an archivist in London, when she stumbles upon a satchel and sketchbook belonging to Edward Radcliffe, as well as a photograph of a beautiful young woman. His images […]

Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery by Robert Kolker

October 11, 2020 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Reader’s Choice. Replacing Violet In May 2010, Shannan Gilbert ran shrieking from a house in Long Island and disappeared. Others had seen and heard her that night, but no one could help find her. The small community of Oak Beach mostly went back to their lives. Then, seven months later, a search dog found the remains of four bodies alongside a nearby highway, not far from where Shannan disappeared. The assumption was that one of those bodies would belong to Shannan. Instead there […]

“You don’t have to tell me you’re fine. I’m not fine. You’re not fine either. We can be honest with each other about that, can’t we?’

Paper Airplanes by Dawn O'Porter

Bingo Square: Nostalgia (set in 1994, when I was 13) Flo is fifteen years old and living on the small British island of Guernsey, just off the coast of France. Flo’s parents have recently separated and she lives with her mum, sister and brother. Her best friend, Sally, is mostly mean to Flo, constantly putting her down and often flirts (badly) with Flo’s brother, Julian. Flo does well in school and mostly keeps her head down. Renee is in the same year but a world […]

One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson

September 10, 2020 by Carriejay 1 Comment

Bingo Square: I Wish. (I thought this was set in Yorkshire but I was wrong, so it’ll have to be for the whole of the UK since I have no idea when I’ll be able to visit again.) *Wasn’t sure about adding expletives to titles but he is. I’ll get to that in a bit. One Good Turn is ostensibly a Jackson Brodie novel, and true, he is in it, but it has many other points of view so it’s often hard to see him […]

“That is the strangest thing about the world: how it looks so different from every point of view.”

Sometimes she sits by the window to draw, and there a young boy named Will watches her from the street. One night a ghost appears to Liesl. He is Po. And he will help her escape the attic. Will is an alchemist’s apprentice. One night he is tasked with taking a very important box to a very important woman, but instead […]
