A very cute retelling

December 11, 2017 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

Aw, this was just adorable. Our modern day Cinderella is Elle Wittimer, who works at her stepmother’s pumpkin-shaped food truck and dreams of escaping to a better life. Her deceased father was a huge fan of a show called Starfield, and Elle sees her chance when they announce a cosplay contest at a comic convention. Our Prince Charming is the star of the new Starfield reboot, and he too feels dissatisfied with his life as a soap opera star and teen heartthrob. “And if we’re both looking up […]

Let this grumpy old man cheer you up

This was one well-researched, information-packed and very funny read. Asner tackles Republican fake news step by step — concentrating primarily on how the right wing consistently misinterprets the Constitution to suit their own needs. It was just released this year, so it’s very up-to-date on the current political climate. This book took me forever to read. There’s so much information in it, and I felt the need to read every single word because it was so interesting. Not such a bad thing! His writing style is […]

Thanx but no thanx

Oh Tom Hanks, I love you so much. You and your wife are adorable. You are an excellent actor. And you seem, by all accounts, to be a fairly cool dude. But you are not a writer. I’m sorry, buddy. I did kind of like the first story, in which a man starts dating this whirlwind of a woman who makes him like, get up off the couch and clean things. I think we’re supposed to side with the beleaguered boyfriend, but mostly I wanted […]

Let’s all make our beds!

December 11, 2017 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

This short little book — which I listened to, read by the author — is an expansion of William H. McRaven’s commencement speech to the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin in 2014. Apparently the speech, which covers 10 important life lessons that McRaven learned in the military, went viral. So he wrote a book explaining each in more detail. “The common people and the great men and women are all defined by how they deal with life’s unfairness: Helen Keller, Nelson Mandela, […]

The Aurora Flu

I have never read such blatantly liberal, feminist, anti-Trump (without ever once mentioning his name) horror in my life. And I love Uncle Steve for that. This was not his best work, but it was good and had some excellent creepy moments. But overall, it had this MESSAGE that yeah, he shoves down the reader’s throat. A lot. But fuck it. He’s Stephen King. I’m just happy to know he’s on my side. “It was funny, when you thought about it; what were all those […]

Sophie Hannah can always be counted on for a solid 3 stars

October 31, 2017 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I have read so many Sophie Hannah books, and outside the Spilling CID novels (which tend to be pretty good), not one of her one-off novels has been great. But — they don’t quite suck either. And they’re usually an easy, one evening read. Cara Burrows has “fled” her perfectly nice husband and their two children in England to spend two weeks at a resort in Arizona. She has her reasons, but really, they’re pretty shitty. While at the resort, she wanders into the wrong […]
