Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler

November 9, 2020 by Sophia 1 Comment

My book club picked Vinegar Girl (2016) by Anne Tyler. It had good reviews, and I think everyone was happy that it was a relatively short novel. According to Amazon, Vinegar Girl was a result of the Hogarth Shakespeare Project. The goal was to retell works by William Shakespeare for a more modern audience. Vinegar Girl is a retelling of The Taming of the Shrew. I obviously know of The Taming of the Shrew, but I’ve never read it. I’ve heard it has problems with misogyny. However I have seen, and really enjoyed, 10 […]

Sunshine State: 2/5 Stars A collection of essays ostensibly about Florida by Sarah Gerard, known for her previous novel Binary Star. Most reviewers (or at least the ones less impressed by this book) seem to land on the idea that the biographical essays are strong while the others are not. I think I fall in the other direction. The book is made of two-three kinds of essays: autobiographical/memoir pieces that range from quite impressionistic and meditative to more story-driven and then nonfiction profile pieces that also […]

Redhead by the Side of the Road by Anne Tyler

July 19, 2020 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

Bingo: Red I read recently that people who tend toward anxiety prefer to watch TV shows and movies that they’ve already seen, because then there’s no anxiety about how things turn out. I think this is true for books, too. I would always, always, prefer to read something I’ve read before–even if I didn’t love it the first time around. I think this is one reason I always return to Anne Tyler–even if it’s a book of hers that I’ve never read before, I know […]

They were supposed to stay at the beach a week, but neither of them had the heart for it and they decided to come back early.

The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler

June 6, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is the 1985 Anne Tyler novel which became the movie starring Kathleen Turner, William Hurt, and Geena Davis who won an Oscar for her role. The novel begins with a benighted vacation where the married Sarah and Macon are quickly realizing (or Sarah is) that the marriage is dying. We learn before long that their son, twelve year old Ethan, died more than a year before (shockingly from murder), and they can’t hold on any more. We learn that Macon is a creature of […]

When Joe Starling was ten years old, his father’s bank foreclosed on a fieldstone mansion which was by then a depressing ruin standing by itself in the middle of a fourteen-section cattle pasture.

Keep The Change – 2/5 Stars This is a novel by Thomas McGuane, mostly known for Western and Southern novels that have an air of seriousness to them and a lot of ironic gesturing and clippy dialog. I’ve previous read one of his short story collections which was very strong, but he’s been around for awhile. This novel is ok, but I can’t say I connected much with it. Joe works as a teen on a farm that his father foreclosed on and the new […]
