Sunrise of the Weeping

Sunrise on the Reaping (The Hunger Games) by Suzanne Collins

May 26, 2025 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

I took a much-needed break from my brief—yet frustrating—foray into the romantasy genre to return to my comfort zone: dystopia. And Sunrise on the Reaping did not disappoint. The book begins back in the bleak, coal-dust-covered District 12, as Haymitch Abernathy prepares for the reaping of the Quarter Quell. It’s been 25 years since the Dark Days, and what better way to mark the anniversary of the end of slaughter than we MORE slaughter? Specifically, by sending double the number of children to their deaths […]

Stag Dance by Torrey Peters

Stag Dance by Torrey Peters

May 23, 2025 by Classic 2 Comments

I thought this was a great collection. I thought the first story was great with a  sci-fi/speculative fiction bent, and the rest were interesting/great, but I think the one story entitled “Stag Dance” just went on a bit too long. It dragged down the rest of the collection. Be warned that there’s a graphic depiction of animal death in “The Chaser.” “Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones” (5 stars)-This was a great start to the collection. We hear about something called The Rift Wars where […]

Brume: The Dragon Awakens by Jérôme Pélissier

May 23, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Brume: The Dragon Awakens by Jérôme Pélissier, illustrated by Carine Hinder Due September 2025   Read via an online reader copy.  What it is about: Magic, mischief and mystery. Well, there is more than that. Like Brume herself. She is a (publisher says feisty, I say down right bratty at times) young girl who is convinced she can do magic. She wants to be the village witch now that the old village witch has gone missing for several years. She is a child found in […]

Hello and welcome to the Galactic Peacekeepers Society…… We come in peace

Ami Moon and the Galactic Peacekeepers: Book One Volume 1 by Frances Lee

May 22, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The powers that be do not want me to write a review for Ami Moon and the Galactic Peacekeepers: Book One Volume 1 by Frances Lee. I had a long review typed out,  when I went to post, I hit something and the entire thing was erased. I then tried multiple times to restart it and it kept screwing up. I finally got it into a document and then couldn’t remember what I wanted to say/what I had said!. Wracking my brain, I came up […]

Invading plants from outer space

Overgrowth by Mira Grant

May 18, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Seanan McGuire is an incredibly prolific writer – I tend to prefer the things she publishes under Seanan McGuire but I still check out her Mira Grant work. Under that pen name, I like her Newsflesh series (zombies) and her mermaid novellas most. This novel is my least favorite thing I have ever read by Seanan McGuire. I wasn’t sure about the premise even going in but I figured Grant/McGuire would have an interesting take. It started strong, beginning with the horror of a little girl’s […]

Houyhnhnms and Dragons

Moonbound by Robin Sloan

May 18, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve had Moonbound on my TBR shelf physically for a while. It’s also been long enough that I don’t remember hardly anything about Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore (first big hit, by this author). I remember that I really enjoyed both Mr. Penumbra and the follow-up, but not direct sequel, Sourdough. I vaguely remember both of the earlier books as vaguely magical realism, and overall entertaining but Moonbound seems to be something a little different. The power of story and narrative is major theme, and it […]
