Sunrise of the Weeping

Sunrise on the Reaping (The Hunger Games) by Suzanne Collins

May 26, 2025 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

I took a much-needed break from my brief—yet frustrating—foray into the romantasy genre to return to my comfort zone: dystopia. And Sunrise on the Reaping did not disappoint. The book begins back in the bleak, coal-dust-covered District 12, as Haymitch Abernathy prepares for the reaping of the Quarter Quell. It’s been 25 years since the Dark Days, and what better way to mark the anniversary of the end of slaughter than we MORE slaughter? Specifically, by sending double the number of children to their deaths […]

Sunrise On The Reaping by Suzanne Collins

May 25, 2025 by lastmidtownshow Leave a Comment

The Hunger Games was a huge part of my youth. Dystopian YA was my lifeblood; series like THG and The Maze Runner kept my heart beating from the ages of nine to fourteen. When The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes came out, I felt myself immediately drawn back into the universe I had lived inside for years, and I could not wait for more. The promise of a new book, from Haymitch’s perspective, became almost too exciting to bear. Sunrise On The Reaping was absolutely […]

A Week for Pop Culture Exploration of Fascist Themes

Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins

May 20, 2025 by llp 3 Comments

My library reservation for Suzanne Collins’ Sunrise on the Reaping, the lastest book in her Hunger Games collection, finally came in two days after I finished watching the remarkable second season of Andor. I have really enjoyed and thought about Collins’ novels over the years, so I knew what I was getting into, but that was a weighty few days of pop culture consumption. Sunrise on the Reaping takes the reader back to the 50th Hunger Games, the Quarter Quell we first heard about in […]

Heartbreaking

Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins

April 19, 2025 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: Fans of the Hunger Games series. In a nutshell: This is the story of Haymitch Abernathy’s Hunger Games. The 50th one, the second quarter quell. Worth quoting: N/A Why I chose it: I heard good things about it. Review: I didn’t read the last prequel, and couldn’t get through the movie – I just didn’t find it to be a good film. Maybe the book was better? But When I saw that this was getting good word of mouth, I knew I wanted […]

The Haymitch behind the Capitol’s narrative

Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins

March 30, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Well fuck. That was so much more devastating than I expected. It’s been forever since I read the original trilogy but I rewatched the movies recently – which means I likely missed some details that didn’t quite make it into the movies (especially around Maysilee’s family and Merrilee). At least, I could truly appreciate appearances of the younger versions of some of the characters from Catching Fire who appeared as mentors (and the amount of tragic backstory we learned about some of them was wrecking). […]
