I really liked the first installment of this graphic novel series, but volume two fell a little flat for me. In volume two, Ada is struggling with her place and purpose in the world now that she has consciousness and can make her own decisions. The two become closer, but understandably, Alex wants to give Ada enough space to figure out who she is. Ada does not take well to Alex’s imposed distancing and decides to venture out into the world on her own. I’m […]
Well, that was some cracked out weirdness
One of my friends recommended the Night Vale podcast to me a while back. I’m not much for podcasts (I know, I know) so I haven’t gotten around to listening to it. I might have to, though, after thoroughly enjoying this rather insane novel based on it. “She understood the world and her place in it. She understood nothing. The world and her place in it were nothing and she understood that.” Night Vale is a small desert town, occupied by ghosts, angels (although angels don’t […]
Goodbye, Kelly Sue. We hardly knew ye.
In case you’re curious, and too lazy to Google it, “Alis Volat Propriis” is Latin for “she flies with her own wings.” I think that’s lovely. It’s a lovely phrase, and it’s a lovely sentiment to end Kelly Sue DeConnick’s run on Captain Marvel. That said, man, I’m just not thrilled with the way this whole thing has turned out. I read Higher, Further, Faster, More earlier this year, and absolutely fell in love with it, and with Carol Danvers. Everything that has come after […]
If anything ever deserved the label ‘feminist as f***’, it’s this book.
I don’t even really know what to say about this book, other than you should probably read it. I was a bit skeptical going in to Bitch Planet, despite glowing reviews, because I’d read Kelly Sue DeConnick’s other non-superhero ongoing comic, Pretty Deadly, earlier this year, and was pretty unimpressed with it at the least, actively turned off at worst. Still can’t decide which at this point. (The art was gorgeous, though.) But holy crap, I shouldn’t have been worried. This was AWESOME. Like, I […]
It’s Christmas time, so of course I’m reading about murder
I’m a couple years behind on this series, even though it’s one of my all-time favorites, but that’s mostly because I insist on re-reading before I get around to new ones, and who has time for all that? These books are number 46, 47 and 53, if you trust the In Death Wiki, and count all the short stories, which I certainly do, and I just did a re-read last year, and I didn’t have time for one this year. Plus, I prefer my books […]
Reading is Fundamental: Magic Ex Libris Book 4
Revisionary is the fourth and final book in Jim C. Hines’ Magic Ex Libris series, and the short version of this review is: this is a satisfying ending that still leaves a Whole Lot of Room in the Libriomancer universe if Jim ever decides to come back to it. The long version is behind the cut because SPOILERS.
