We’re two worlds apart.

Rocking the Cowboy by Skylar M. Cates

March 9, 2026 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

Jed is happy. He has his ranch, his horses, and his sister, and his niece. His good-for-nothing father Buddy only contacts Jed when he needs something. After leaving the ranch in Jed’s care, Buddy reinvented himself as entertainment royalty. One of the stars he manages, Remy Sean, needs someplace to lie low and recuperate after an attack during his last concert. Jed doesn’t want anything to do with Buddy, but instead of saying no, he sees an opportunity to negotiate. If Buddy agrees to escort […]

Cinderella triumphs again

An Offer From a Gentleman by Julia Quinn

March 9, 2026 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I’ve watched most of the Bridgerton series, and I generally find it entertaining. So, when the latest season became available on Netflix, I watched the first half of the season–everything that was available at the time. It is a Cinderella story, involving the second-oldest Bridgerton brother, Benedict (the spare). And I really liked it. I thought the chemistry between the two lead actors was great, and I found Benedict to be a charming, charismatic, and funny leading man. I decided to read An Offer From a Gentleman (2001) by Julia Quinn […]

Toe to Toe

“My mom made it pretty clear that ballet was going to be my thing, whether I liked it or not.” I shrug. “I guess it’s good I liked it.”

Toe to Toe by Falon Ballard

March 5, 2026 by Emmalita 5 Comments

Before I started reading my advance reader copy of Toe to Toe, a passionate negative review caught my eye. There have been a few times when I’ve been the reviewer deeply offended by something in a book, so I did read with it in mind. In the end, I felt like the reviewer’s complaint is a legitimate criticism, but that the story Falon Ballard is telling, in all its messiness, is worth telling. Most of my knowledge of ballet comes from pop culture with the […]

The Hope Once Lost

Grief and romance

The Hope Once Lost by Ambar Cordova

March 4, 2026 by Emmalita 3 Comments

Ambar Cordova’s The Hope Once Lost is an angsty, grief fueled romance, and yet I found myself smiling many times. I really do love romances that dive into grief. Some of the best romances start with the way grief changes us. The Hope Once Lost is part of Cordova’s Baker Oaks series. Technically, it can be read as a stand alone, but I spent too much time trying to keep characters straight to recommend it. After an aborted attempt to visit the father who abandoned […]

Fake Flame

Fake Flame revisited with my ears

Fake Flame by Adele Buck

March 3, 2026 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I read and reviewed Adele Buck’s Fake Flame in April, 2024. When I saw an advance listener copy narrated by Moniqua Plante available on NetGalley I smashed the request button. I love being able to revisit books as audiobooks because I will notice different things, and plot points will hit differently in different formats. Moniqua Plante’s narration is warm and friendly, perfect for this lowish stakes, thoroughly adult romance. My favorite thing about Fake Flame, in any format, is that it’s romance for grownups. Eva […]

Weres and their mates

Mate by Ali Hazelwood

March 2, 2026 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Shortly after I finished Bride by Ali Hazelwood, the second book in this world: Mate (2025), became available. So, I quickly read that one as well. In many ways, Mate is very similar to Bride in that it is a love story involving weres, humans, and vampyres. We meet Serena at the end of Bride. She is best friends with Bride‘s protagonist, and she’d been kidnapped because she was half-were and half human–something heretofore unheard of in this world. At the very end of Bride, Koen Alexander, the Alpha wolf of the Northwest pack runs into […]
