Hi! My name is The Book Omnivore and I am a few months late to the Cannonball Read  party. I hope that’s ok. I’ve participated in CR a couple of times before but I always hesitate to join because some years I read loads of books and other years my brain refuses to read anything more complicated than the instructions for how you make tea, and I never know what kind of year it’s going to be. But having already read 27 books by May […]

The Only Good Indians- Atmosphere for DAAAAYYYYSSSS

The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones

May 8, 2021 by NatteringwPride 3 Comments

The Only Good Indians has been on my too- read shelf for at least a year now (I got an ARC and then promptly forgot to read it until after the book had been published). Then, someone on Cannonball reviewed it and reminded me how excited I was to read it originally- so here we are. The only Good Indians is about a group of friends and former friends literally haunted by a shameful act from their past. I am hesitating to describe more because […]

20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill

The Green Man by Kingsley Amis

April 29, 2021 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

20th Century Ghosts – 3/5 Stars Decidedly a mixed bag for me on this first collection of Joe Hill stories. What’s interesting in part is that the ways in which this book is talked about on the cover, in the introduction, and other places really seems to indicate that they weren’t sure Joe Hill was going to make it, or wanted people to take him seriously. Without a doubt he’s a serious writer, and very talented, but that sort of “son of the most famous […]

Unhappy Meal

Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica

April 25, 2021 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

Imagine a world ravaged by diseased animals, where humanity collectively agrees to cull all animals and, in their place, breed humans for consumption. That is the terrifying premise at the centre of Tender is the Flesh, a dystopian novel by Argentine author Agustina Bazterrica (translated to English by Sarah Moses). This book disturbed me to my very core and motivated me to cancel my recent butcher-box delivery subscription. The novel describes, in great detail, the process of slaughtering humans for meat. Though never explicitly said, […]

Death Becomes Her

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

April 25, 2021 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

I feel like a ‘real’ cannonballer, now that I’ve finally tackled Gideon the Ninth. I feel like I see this book all over Cannonball Read, and that it comes highly acclaimed. The quote on the front cover sums it up fairly well: Lesbian necromancers explore a haunted gothic palace in space! Decadent nobles vie to service the deathless emperor! Skeletons! This is a fantasy novel, focussing on Gideon – a plucky upstart who wields her sharp sword and tongue with aplomb. She’s scathing, she’s edgy, […]

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

April 12, 2021 by Singsonggirl Leave a Comment

Dark, melancholic and undoubtedly the source of so many horror movies, We Have Always Lived in the Castle tells the story of 18-year old Mary Katherine Blackwood, her sister Constance and their wheelchair bound uncle Julian, who live in a grand house in Vermont on their own. The rest of their family died six years ago in a tragic poisoning for which Constance was blamed but acquitted. The villagers still suspect and fear her though, so she lives as a shut-in and only Mary Katherine, […]
