As the Romans do

I, Claudius by Robert Graves

December 9, 2021 by Singsonggirl Leave a Comment

I love historical fiction, it’s my thing and this often gets touted as the first “modern” historical novel, so I of course was very curious. Started this last year in English, but intelligently put the book in the storage room with the rest of my on-hold life, found it in one of the free book cases in German though and finished it. Except, as I’ve learned while looking for pics for this review, I most likely read the condensed German translation that includes Claudius The […]

The East German Harry Potter for goth kids

Krabat by Otfried Preußler

December 9, 2021 by Singsonggirl 2 Comments

One of my favourite books in middle school, reread it here in my exile at my mum’s place and while it clearly is for children (well..), it’s as deliciously dark as I remember. In the early 18th century, Krabat, a 14-year old Wendish beggar boy (check out what that people is, you’re in for a cool history/ethnology lesson) finds himself called to a lonely mill in the middle of the woods. He starts an exhausting apprenticeship, where the mysterious miller doesn’t just teach him and […]

Soothe Yourself

Dubliners by James Joyce

December 9, 2021 by Singsonggirl Leave a Comment

I’ve always liked Dubliners unironically, even after I was informed that it apparently is something people hated to read in school (maybe that was just my friends, please enlighten me on this). A separate print of The Dead was one of the first books I got from the adult section at my local library, when I was still very much a child and I remember being blown away by the beauty of it. Two or three years ago I finally read the whole book and […]

The depths of human nature

Terrible Faithfulness by Marlen Haushofer

October 27, 2021 by Singsonggirl Leave a Comment

Marlen Haushofer is one of my absolute favourite authors and you cannot imagine how much it pains me that this never was translated into English. Her most famous novel, The Wall, did get translated, it got a so-so movie adaptation too, but her true strength lies in novellas and short stories. And you’re all missing out on this brilliant collection of short stories! She’s a true master of the field. I’m tagging this “horror” as well, even though they’re technically not horror stories. They’re stories […]

Priest meets hot underaged shepherd girl

The Heretic of Soana by Gerhart Hauptmann

October 27, 2021 by Singsonggirl Leave a Comment

If you want a quick understanding of German Naturalism, read this. Gerhart Hauptmann is a controversial figure in literature: he was adored/instrumentalised by the Nazis, despite his clear textual deviations from their ideologies (let’s just call it “complicated”), but his influence on literature and language is undisputed up until today. This book really sums up everything that happened in his earlier works: young priest moves to remote village in the mountainous parts of Northern Italy, is stricken by the poverty of a banished family, but also […]

the world of yesterday

We’re all so f*cked

The World of Yesterday by Stefan Zweig

October 27, 2021 by Singsonggirl 2 Comments

It took me ages to finish this book. Not because I had troubles reading it, the language in this is in fact incredibly fluid, I would even say that German prose hardly gets better than this. It took me so long because the dawning realisation that people don’t change, they don’t ever change, is a lot to bear. The sheer relatability of this upset me to the core and it should reach so many more people. The World of Yesterday is the memoir of Stefan […]
