A National Book Award for such times as these.

December 10, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

I read this well over a month ago, but considering the present circumstances in which I am finally writing this review, I feel this third of the March trilogy has the most emotional impact. I won’t recap the first two books in the trilogy here, but you can read my other reviews of Books One and Two. You definitely want to read those volumes first. John Lewis sets a lot of context for this third and most explosive act in the saga. Full review here.

John Lewis is a hero, Part II.

December 9, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

Because March is a three-part series, it’s hard to talk about each book individually, because each develops the larger story arc. Nevertheless, I’ll do my best. As with the last book, Lewis, Aydin, and Powell develop a captivating narrative which delves into Lewis’s life and history as an activist and warrior for equality in the United States. Read my non-spoilery review here.

Thank you to our most lovely exchange coordinator, faintingviolet, for my new books :D

December 9, 2016 by narfna 5 Comments

I came home from a poop day at work to a book exchange package from Katie (faintingviolet) and it made my day. I legit squealed when I opened the first book and saw Wishful Drinking. And I’ve been meaning to read Austenland and start Sandman for yearrrrs. (Although, I will confess that I’m actually super intimidated to start Sandman.) Thank you so much, Katie! And thank you for organizing this beautimous tradition.

Street Kid James Bond

November 21, 2016 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I, like so many of you other dedicated Cannonball Book Clubbers, am working my way through The Count of Monte Cristo. I have gone abridged, and it is still a long book. In that time, I have also been interspersing my reading with quicker, lighter, fare. Enter, Kingsman. This is lighter fare if you are a particular kind of reader, or find certain kinds of jokes funny. The first few pages of issue one, where (SPOILER) Mark Hamill gets killed, by accident? Perfection as far […]

What the heck are baggywrinkles?

November 14, 2016 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Given to me as a birthday present, I was intrigued by the title and cover of “Baggywrinkles: A Lubber’s Guide to Life at Sea”.  At the time I joked that it was a good length for me to include in my Cannonball Read this year.  This past Saturday I was running out the door to sit in a waiting room and needed a new book to read.  I reached for a sci-fi novel called “Nova” that’s been waiting to be read for months now only […]

1940s Hollywood Noir for $6

November 8, 2016 by Halbs 4 Comments

That night began just like every other night. I sat in my car. My car sat in an empty parking lot. The black grit some barista had the nerve to call coffee kept me warm enough. Headlights flashed through my passenger-side windows. I perked up and turned down the radio as a Jeep pulled into the parking lot and cruised over in my general direction. He was late, as usual. If he’s always late, and I show up early, am I the one with the problem? […]
