Seriously Cinematic Comic Strips

November 5, 2016 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I read a review someone posted about Filmish a few weeks ago (which I can’t seem to find to credit) (*Edit* it was faintingviolet’s review) and thought the subject matter sounded interesting and the comic concept intriguing. While I do read a few online comics like Sarah Andersen and the Oatmeal this was probably the longest comic book I’ve read. Ross splits his book into seven sections: The Eye, The Body, Sets & Architecture, Time, Voice & Language, Power & Ideology and Technology & Technophobia. He […]

Catherine Morland Seeks Her Own Gothic Novel

October 31, 2016 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

I’ve been pretty open about the idea that comics are still a reading stumbling block for me. My friend Alison loves comics so whenever she comes across something she thinks might do the trick for me, she makes sure to get it into my hands. I sometimes decline her suggestions due to time limitations, but I always try to see what she’s offering. A couple weeks ago she handed me Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey in comic form, and there was no way I wasn’t going […]

Like the Great Movie Ride in Book Form

October 20, 2016 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I’m a relatively omnivorous reader. I read a little bit of almost everything (high fantasy, horror,  and poetry seem to be my blind spots). A quick survey of my non-fiction shows that I have an interest in movies, film history, and Classic Hollywood. My podcast listening backs that up as well,  as I follow You Must Remember This and Fighting in the War Room . Through one of my other favorite podcast listens, A Storm of Spoilers, I was introduced to Filmish and immediately put […]

Kirk and Spock Entertain After Weeks of Meetings

October 7, 2016 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

This book would probably make a nice gift for the Trekkie in your life, so if you are the kind of person who starts their holiday shopping already and are in need of fun gift to add to the pile, then go on ahead and click that link up there and get some of these for yourself.  I am not a huge Star Trek fan – a feel like that is a needed reminder of why I’m ranking this three stars – but I did […]

Cold and Muted and Excellent

September 29, 2016 by Halbs Leave a Comment

In yesterday’s Chewbacca review, I did my best to sum up the recent transition of the Star Wars comic book rights from Dark Horse to Marvel: Star Wars fans were nervous when Marvel/Disney took over Star Wars comics from Dark Horse. For years, DH had told some amazing stories in the Star Wars universe through the medium of comics. It was unclear whether Marvel would live up to Dark Horse’s standards, or if it would just publish tie-in garbage. While I am only a casual Star […]

“GGWWWRGHH.”

A lot of Star Wars fans were nervous when Marvel/Disney took over Star Wars comics from Dark Horse. For years, DH had told some amazing stories in the Star Wars universe through the medium of comics. It was unclear whether Marvel would live up to Dark Horse’s standards, or if it would just publish tie-in garbage. While I am only a casual Star Wars fan, I am a true comic book nerd. I am happy to report that Marvel is doing great with Star Wars. They […]
