The opposite of a short story, but could’ve been one!

Wake-Up Calls by Mariah Stewart

August 22, 2026 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This is not a bad book, but it definitely could’ve been a short story or a novella. It’s nearly four hundred pages long, and I didn’t need at least two hundred fifty of them. I remember thinking I wish I could read a kindle book on 1.5x like I do on audiobooks that I’m trying to power through. I read this at night in my bed, and I remember each night getting into my bed and not being able to remember what book I was […]

Cats are Magic!

We'll Prescribe You Another Cat by Syou Ishida, E. Madison Shimoda (Translator)

August 22, 2026 by kfishgirl 2 Comments

I read the first book (this title minus “Another”) last summer. I’m a crazy cat lady, so it touched my heart and soul. Gratuitous cat shots (Osiris on left, Horus on right): There’s a pretty magical mental health clinic in Japan called The Kokoro Clinic for the Soul that appears for people when they need it. I totally loved the first book. It made me laugh and cry. This one did too. I was sobbing near the end. The first book was definitely better, but […]

I tried with this one

The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

August 22, 2026 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This was another book that my new spin friends suggested to me. It was MUCH better than the Flock book, but not as good as they thought it was or I wanted it to be. Again, cute premise, but mother of god this main character was oblivious. I have a really hard time with stories that require the main characters to be generally dumb about normal interactions, and keep them from having simple conversations that would clear up most of the conflict. Olive Smith is […]

A witch is simply a woman who listens to her intuition

First Witches Club by Maisey Yates

August 22, 2026 by kfishgirl 1 Comment

If you’re looking for a cozy-ish read about women learning how to live for themselves and get revenge, this is it. We meet each of our three main characters fairly early in the book, but it’s basically Nora’s story. Her husband has just left her for a wellness retreat in Chile to “find himself”. Nora tries to convince herself for a lot of the book that her marriage is fine, and she’s just helping out her new friends with their failing marriages. She reconnects with […]

Atmosphere got me here

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

August 22, 2026 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This is one of those stories that starts out at the end. We learn that Nina’s house is the site of a huge party every year, and this year it’s burning to the ground. To the writer’s credit, I very quickly forgot that the story was going to end in a fire. We meet the four Riva siblings in bits. Nina is basically the main character, and she’s a world class surfer and supermodel. She just found out that her husband has been cheating on […]

Recommended by my new friends, and I won’t hold that against them

The Ravenhood #1 Flock by Kate Stewart

August 22, 2026 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So it took me a while to get into this book. My new friends that I met at spin class recommended this book / series to me. There’s some steamy sex in it, and I think that may have blinded them to how badly this book is written. I really like my new friends, so I will not judge them harshly for liking this book. We all have our things. Let me just start by sharing my kindle highlights for this book… Please keep in […]
