I enjoyed Older’s Half-Resurrection Blues, but adored Shadowshaper. He really brought a magical alternative Brooklyn to life with this tale. Sierra Santiago is a normal teenager excited for her summer break. She’s going to hang out with friends and spend her time painting murals around the city, until a creepy guy crashes the first party of the season and ends up chasing her. Combined with some weird occurrences like a mural weeping and her incapacitated abuelo repeating the same phrase over and over, she knows […]
The Adventures of Anne, NOT the Perils of Pamela
Anne Beddingfeld’s father is a famous archaeologist and anthropologist. He dies, leaving Anne mostly penniless, but hungry for adventure. She kindly rejects the proposal of the village doctor and accepts her father’s solicitor’s invitation to stay with him and his wife for a time in London. Shortly after her arrival in the capital, she is witness to an accidental death. A man in a large overcoat reeking of mothballs falls onto the tracks of the train station, and a tall, bearded man claiming to be […]
She can shapeshift into a shark with boobs!
4.5 stars Because I have a lot of reviews to catch up on, thanks to my clumsiness which caused my brain to get rattled and shook up, I’m once again resorting to plot summary via Goodreads: Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: to prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies […]
No vampires, obsessive fans, evil clowns, psychic teens or weary gunslingers in this one. There is a ghost, though.
21-year-old college student Devin Jones gets a summer job at old-fashioned carnival and amusement park Joyland, trying to mend his broken heart, after his girlfriend left him for another. Working at Joyland, he’s taught the ways of the experienced carnies, discovers his knack for entertaining children while “wearing the fur” of park mascot Howie the Hound, lays the foundation of some life-long friendships and discovers the legend of the genuinely haunted House of Horror, where a young woman in a blue dress and an alice […]
Wrong on so, so many levels
I just read a terrible romance where the heroine is a senior at Penn, the hero is a 40-ish doctor who stops in at the coffee shop where she works once a week. He turns out to be an ob/gyn who volunteers at the university’s clinic once a week. Want to guess who her random doctor is when she goes in for birth control? Or who turns out to be a heiress and illegitimate daughter of a now deceased US Senator? Or who winds up […]
“I shouldn’t mind being a bride at a wedding if I could be one without having a husband.”
I had no idea what this story was about when a friend dragged me to see the new adaptation of Far From the Madding Crowd with Carey Mulligan. Thank god she did because I looooooooooved it. To the point where I was almost afraid to read the book. What if it didn’t live up to the movie? FFtMC tells the story of Bathsheba Everdene, a headstrong woman who ends up inheriting and running a Weatherbury farm in Victorian era England. She is very young at […]
