Sticking It to Cancer One Book at a Time

When I tell you, when I tell you, when I tell you.

Guardian by Sara Fields

Y’all… This warranted an immediate phone call to my former review writing partner, Pattykins. Do you remember several years ago when Patty and I read When Life Happened by Jewel E. Ann and it had such a shocking twist that I set up a separate Facebook group so that we could talk about the twist after you all read it? Guardian by Sara Fields came real close to that level of what the fuck just happened, which I would not have expected at all from […]

Nostalgia. And My Favorite Cat.

Obernewtyn by Isobelle Carmody

Obernewtyn, by Australian author Isobelle Carmody, is the first book in what was originally meant to be a five part series. However, this original plan didn’t quite pan out and The Obernewtyn Chronicles ended up pulling the same kind of seam-splitting expansion that would later be codified in popular culture by The Song of Ice and Fire by growing to a total of seven books. Which were published across nearly thirty years*. The series itself is as old as I am.  I’ve always had a […]

Gods and Monsters

Queen of Dreams by Kit Rocha

Queen of Dreams is so fun. It opens with Ash, Zanya, and other members of the High Court preventing soldiers from burning an old woman as a witch. Rot in The Sheltered Lands is being spread by the regents who took control after Zanya murdered the evil king. There are intrigues, preparations for war, gods fighting gods, lovers sparring using their full abilities, lovers loving to their full abilities, and endless buckets of hope. The world building in this series is amazing and I am so […]

A Winter’s Tale from the Rivers of London

Winter's Gift by Ben Aaronovitch

by Leave a Comment

Winter’s Gift is the most recent novella in the ongoing River’s of London series by Ben Aaronovitch and the subject actually came as a surprise to me when I got the book. When you have a character in the series called Tobias Winter (a German police officer) then an assumption that this is one of his books seemed logical, instead this is set in the US and features FBI agent Kimberley Reynolds. Rewinding for a Rivers of London recap: magic is real, gods exist and […]
