“There’s something about a kiss that brings all the opposites together. The wanting and the getting. The longing and the having.”

The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center

August 9, 2024 by Malin Leave a Comment

4.5 stars Emma Wheeler loves romantic comedies and has even won a contest with one of her screenplays. But with a father who needs around-the-clock care, and a sister to put through school, Emma’s career dreams had to take a backseat. Now her agent has an amazing job opportunity for her, to work with the screenwriter she admires the most in the world, Charlie Yates. However, there is no way she can do the job remotely, she will need to stay in LA for six […]

Just don’t do what I do

Eat That Frog! by Brian Tracy

August 6, 2024 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I am sitting on my couch, and I have over twenty reviews to catch up on. So, it’s not surprising why I chose to read Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time (2017) by Brian Tracy. I have a problem with procrastination, and I was looking for some inspiration. I listened to the audiobook. I thought the author did a good job reading the book. It was quick, to the point, and had some good ideas. Although […]

Four Weddings and a Funeral

Husband Material by Alexis Hall

August 2, 2024 by Malin Leave a Comment

CBR16 Bingo: Rings (a whole bunch of rings being exchanged in this book) In Boyfriend Material, Luc and Oliver met, pretended to date for a number of reasons, pretended to be in love, fell in love, broke up, and then decided to actually date for real. By the time this book starts, they have been together for a good while (I want to say at least a year?) and as is often the case at a certain age of your life, they keep being invited […]

A Gaslamp-Inspired Sci-Fi Mystery

The Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Older

August 1, 2024 by RouletteGirl 4 Comments

The Mimicking of Known Successes imagines a future where humanity, having completely wrecked Earth and then Mars, has settled on the rings of Jupiter. The entire civilization lives on a series of platforms orbiting above the gas planet, connected to one another across the rings by a series of rail lines. On one of the most distant platforms a man has gone missing. He seems to have stepped off the platform to his death, but why? Inspector Mossa follows his trail back to the university […]

In Which Matilda Halifax Learns the Value of Restraint by Alexandra Vasti

July 31, 2024 by Nart Leave a Comment

The second novella in the Halifax Hellions series and another strong entry. Stuns me that Vasti gave these out for free, but what a way to whet our appetites for a full length novel. Plot: If you recall from the first novella, according to her sister Margo, Matilda had been basically abducted by an old man who had murdered his previous wife to be (forcibly?) married, then tortured at his distant Northern estate until death. Yikes. Now we get Matilda’s version. We find out that […]

“That’s not a father. That’s a sperm donor. Forget him. He’s a mess. Concentrate on me. I’m terrific.”

The Cinderella Deal by Jennifer Crusie

July 29, 2024 by Nart 1 Comment

I love reading Crusie novels to remind myself that not every romance novel pre-mid-2000’s is, in retrospect, unreadable trash. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely adore Loretta Chase, but her 90’s books, as lovely as they are, definitely still need to be read with the context that those books are 30 years old now. The real pain from reading this book almost 30 years later was that Daisy was paying, for a bachelor apartment, $300/month in rent. *cries in rent inflation and wage stagnation* Plot: […]
