“This killer was just herself turned inside out. Her fatal inversion.”

Deadly Animals by Marie Tierney

November 15, 2024 by narfna Leave a Comment

Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the contents of my review. This is a slow, quiet, dark book. Don’t go in expecting anything in your face. It actually took me a bit to become emotionally into, but this turned out to be worth the wait. I just had to get in the right headspace. That said, it does feel like something is lacking for me, that ineffable thing, that would make this a five star read. I’m not sure […]

“Just thinking of all the ways this can go horribly wrong.”

10 Things That Never Happened by Alexis Hall

November 11, 2024 by dreadpiratekel 2 Comments

Sam Becker manages a bed and bath department store and has some wacky employees reporting to him.  While the employees keep making Sam’s retail life interesting in various ways, he likes his job.  He however does not like his boss, Jonathan (“His Royal Dickishness”).  The feeling is mutual, as Jonathan is out to make money and Sam’s store is not making their targets.  So Sam gets called down to headquarters (in London) to be given an ultimatum – fire some of the staff and get […]

It’s not a walk in the woods

At Home: A Short History of Private Life by Bill Bryson

November 11, 2024 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I’ve already read A Walk in the Woods and The Body by Bill Bryson, and I found them both entertaining and informative. So, when I went looking for another audiobook for my commute, I decided to give At Home: A Short History of Private Life (2010) by Bryson a shot. Bill Bryson lives in an old parsonage in a rural part of England, and he uses this home as a framework to work through a lot of history that made his home a home. Although he goes into a number of […]

“Fascinating. You look all frail and breakable, but you’re really a violent little thing, aren’t you?”

The Fourth Wing Part 1 by Rebecca Yarros

November 10, 2024 by Nart 1 Comment

I do not enjoy young adult novels. This is very much a young adult novel. It claims to be general content, but it is a beat by beat young adult Hunger Games type novel, with maybe a bit more gore. Plot: There’s a ruthless society and they send everyone to a school where people get placed in different colleges. This time, it’s classic high school rules – the jocks go to fight, the nerds go to the library, and we don’t really care about anyone […]

Annie are You Okay, Are you Okay Annie?

Misery by Stephen King

November 10, 2024 by dreadpiratekel Leave a Comment

I am a professed Stephen King fan, and one of my don’t call it a goal, but it is like a goal, for 2024 was to read more of his backlist.  I have been avoiding Misery for many years because I like reading more about monsters that are supernatural vs. monsters that are evil people. But 2024 is the year I decided I would give it a chance and overall I am glad that I did. The plot of Misery is that author Paul Sheldon […]

More danger, calamity and heroism in space (Bingo)

Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

November 8, 2024 by Malin Leave a Comment

CBR16 Sweet Books: Binge CBR16 Bingo: Celestial (set in space. I’m sure the characters observe lots of stars on their epic journeys through space) Spoiler warning: this is the third and final book in the Illuminae Files. A lot of stuff happened in the previous two novels, and it will be impossible to review this book without referring to some significant plot points. Additionally, I don’t see how this book would be a satisfying reading experience taken out of context. So if you aren’t up […]
