If you’ve read The Guest List, you can skip this one

The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley

February 26, 2023 by Mobius_Walker 1 Comment

I read Lucy Foley’s other popular book The Guest List a few years ago and I enjoyed it. Fun, fast paced, interesting story line, so I was excited for another mystery by Foley. This one, The Paris Apartment, was nowhere near as enjoyable because so much felt exactly the same: multiple points of view, some characters sharing a mysterious past, and an outsider trying to figure it all out. The Paris Apartment just felt like a rehashing of The Guest List but in Paris. Jess is […]

The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill

Okay now this is a twist!

The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill

February 26, 2023 by Mobius_Walker 2 Comments

Okay. Let me see if I can accurately summarize this book. The Woman in the Library is a book by Sulari Gentill about an author named Hannah Tigone who is writing a new mystery novel. Hannah sends each of the chapters she writes to a penpal named Leo for feedback. Each chapter of The Woman in the Library is a fictional chapter in Hannah’s book followed by feedback and notes from Leo. The fictional book that Hannah is writing is about an author who was awarded a […]

The Genealogy of Southern Cooking

The Cooking Gene by Michael Twitty

February 23, 2023 by reginadelmar 2 Comments

This is a book that showcases my shortcomings as a reviewer. I really enjoyed listening to this book, but am struggling to write about it. It is a memoir, a history of southern cuisine and a book on genealogy. Twitty reads the book himself which works well because the book is a very personal journey. He describes himself as an “obsessive cook with compulsive genealogist tendencies who can point to a map of Africa, Europe, North America, and with it, the South, and guide you […]

Back in a spell book cover. Features text on a blue background with snowflakes and astrological symbols. A lit candle is in the foreground.

You put a spell on me

Back in a Spell by Lana Harper

February 23, 2023 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I’m officially obsessed with this series. I loved the first book so much; a queer revenge story where contemporary witches plot to get the best of their sketchy ex and overthrow a family with too much power? Yes please. The second book was solid and enjoyable, but not queer, so it didn’t stand out as much in my mind. This book though? Super queer with a main character who isn’t always the most likable, but is trying to be better for the people she loves […]

She’s Been Through It

Finding Me by Viola Davis

February 17, 2023 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: Those familiar with Davis’s work. Those interested in a serious discussion of the challenges a Black woman faces. In a nutshell: Actor Viola Davis tells the story of her life so far. Worth quoting: “Forgiveness is giving up all hope of a different past.” Why I chose it: I heard people talking about it so I purchased the audio book (I do love a celebrity memoir read by the author). Then she won the Grammy for the performance of it so I decided […]

A really good fantasy debut, with one glaring flaw.

The Justice of Kings (Empire of the Wolf, #1) by Richard Swan

February 15, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was promising! I’ve had my eye on it since it was published, and an audio sale at Libro.fm finally gave me the incentive to pick it up. I was originally reading The Pariah by Anthony Ryan at this spot in my February TBR, but listening to that book was a better sleep aid than it was a story*, and after only a couple of hours of attempting to listen, I swapped it out for this one, and that was a great decision. I particularly […]
