Funny, Charming, and Bittersweet

Nimona by ND Stevenson

November 11, 2024 by Tracy 2 Comments

I’m so glad I’ve started getting more into graphic novels because Nimona, by transmasculine author ND Stevenson, is excellent. Titular character Nimona arrives at the lair of Ballister Blackheart to announce (not ask) that she’s his new sidekick. While he is initially inclined to reject this proposal, he changes his mind upon discovering that she is a shapeshifter. Ballister is a supervillain with a strong moral code who doesn’t want to kill anyone, especially innocent people. Nimona has no such compunction, and it’s entertaining to […]

A Disappointing End to the Trilogy

Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi

Children of Anguish and Anarchy by Tomi Adeyemi

November 8, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

Children of Virtue and Vengeance Although the blurb on this book primarily references Zélie, Amari’s POV seems to be in this novel at least as much as Zélie’s, certainly more so than in the first book. She’s an important part of the novel and also a frustrating one. There is a lot of repetition of characters’ thoughts and behaviors in this book. Set a few weeks after the events of the last book, civil war has essentially broken out. Zélie’s ritual didn’t just return magic […]

When Clever Isn’t Quite Enough

Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett

October 28, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

In the satirical novel Guards! Guards!, a secret brotherhood of (mostly witless) Ankh-Morpork citizens is led by the Supreme Grand Master, who wants to summon a dragon to the city to wreak havoc. They plan to invent a long-lost king to defeat the dragon and end the oppression they think they are experiencing. Of course, plans go awry and this story intersects with that of the Night Watch, a small group of officers who get no respect because their role is essentially pointless given that […]

Another Solid Read by Emily Henry

Beach Read by Emily Henry

October 23, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

I love books that have banter — the sassier and snarkier, the better. While Beach Read doesn’t quite hit that banter to the extent that some of my favs like Get a Life, Chloe Brown or Red, White & Royal Blue do, it does have those moments, especially in the beginning. January Andrews is stressed about her writer’s block and grieving the death of her father a year ago, so when she comes across former college rival Gus Everett, she has no qualms about sniping […]

Semi-Fake Dating with Great Romantic Leads

Funny Story by Emily Henry

October 18, 2024 by Tracy 2 Comments

This is my second Emily Henry novel, and I like it just as much as the first. Henry writes solid romances with emotional depth. In this one, Daphne moved in with Miles after their respective partners Peter and Petra declared their love for each other, and former fiancé Peter kicked Daphne out of the house that was only in his name. Daphne had uprooted her life to move to Waning Bay, Michigan, with Peter and had built her life around him. The only thing that’s […]

Magical Teens on a Quest

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

October 14, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

Although it follows the beats of typical quest novel, I really enjoyed reading Children of Blood and Bone. The story is set in the country of Orïsha and told from the POVs of 3 characters, but the one who gets the most attention is Zélie. Her maji mother was killed when Zélie was a child after King Saran decided to eliminate magic from the land. Saran now oppresses people known as divîners, meaning they would have eventually become maji if he hadn’t ended magic. One […]
