“You Can Be Strong in Any Shape. You Can Be Anything.”

The Sword of Kaigen by M. L. Wang

August 21, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

This won the Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off back in 2019, and it’s clear why. Self-published books can be hit or miss, and The Sword of Kaigen feels so polished and compelling, though not without flaws. Also, be sure to check content warnings – there is a lot of tragedy in this book. The structure is unconventional, with the climax occurring about halfway through the book. The remainder of the novel deals with the aftermath, which works well in this character-driven novel. I would also argue that […]

Shades of Magic Trilogy – and My First BINGO

A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab

A Gathering of Shadows by V. E. Schwab

A Conjuring of Light by V. E. Schwab

August 7, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

A Darker Shade of Magic I knew I would eventually want to pick up another V. E. Schwab book after finishing The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, and I’m glad that I selected A Darker Shade of Magic to continue my Schwab reading journey because I really enjoyed it. It’s set in a 4 parallel worlds, all of which somehow have a London essentially in the same place in each of those worlds. Grey London (from the era of George III) has no magic. Red […]

How to Talk so Little Kids Will Listen: A Survival Guide to Life with Children Ages 2-7 by Joanna Faber and Julie King

July 26, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

This book is designed to help parents effectively communicate with “[t]errible two-year-olds, truculent three-year-olds, ferocious four-year-olds, foolhardy five-year-olds, self-centered six-year-olds, and the occasional semi-civilized seven-year-old.” Co-author Joanna Faber is the daughter of a co-author of the well-known How to Talk so Kids Will Listen & Listen so Kids Will Talk. It’s focused on providing skills that parents can use with their young children. The book is divided into two sections. The first is the “Essential Toolbox” of broad categories of tools, such as tools for […]

Gothic Vibes in a Waterlogged Setting

A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid

July 24, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

To start with, this is one of the most accurate and well-chosen titles I have seen for a book. It’s relevant on multiple levels, from the literal to the psychological to, we eventually find out, the medical. This stood out to me more than book titles typically do. Our psychologically drowning main character is Effy Sayre, the only female architecture student at a university that wouldn’t accept her to the literature college, which was where she wanted to be, because “women dumb” basically. This reflects […]

A Magical Zoo Adventure

The Phoenix Keeper by S. A. MacLean

July 19, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

This was a charming cozy romantasy with great diversity and mental health representation. It takes place primarily in a zoo of magical creatures, and it was a pleasure to see MacLean’s creativity as she described these animals. Main character Aila is the phoenix keeper at the zoo and has been trying for years to reboot a breeding program for the endangered Silimalo phoenix. When a neighboring zoo loses their phoenix hatchlings and their mother to poachers, Aila’s zoo is given the opportunity to try a […]

Still Piecing Together the Puzzle

Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

July 15, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

After reading this, I don’t know how I’m going to be able to wait for the last book to come out. Although I think Harrow the Ninth was the best out of the three Locked Tomb books, Nona the Ninth was still so good, and I want to know how everything is going to unfold in the end. Nona has a very different tone than the first two books, primarily because it’s following Nona, who could not be more different from both Gideon and Harrowhark. Although in […]
