I love to read, and I love to learn. I wish I were retired so I could spend more time on my random flights of fancy. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Sophia's Quick Questions interview.)

Sophia's Reviews:

Tragic and thought-provoking

June 23, 2014 by Sophia 2 Comments

Isabel doesn’t mind the isolation of the lighthouse but she longs more than anything for a family. After two miscarriages and a stillbirth, she is beyond miserable. And that’s when an opportunity arises. Read the full review here.

A review for the book everyone’s read

June 19, 2014 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Unlike the rest of the world, I had not heard of Allie Brosh or her blog until I saw the spate of reviews of her new book, Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, flawed coping mechanisms, mayhem, and other things that happened (2013) on Cannonball. To be honest, I wasn’t sure I was going to like it when I first heard about it. It looked a little weird and potentially unrelatable, but the reviews were so wholeheartedly positive that I didn’t want to be left […]

Musings on Live, Love, and Politics from the Sexpert

June 17, 2014 by Sophia 1 Comment

I jumped immediately from What Do Women Want? by Daniel Bergner to American Savage (2013) by Dan Savage. I took it as a sign that Savage’s recommended reading in his introduction included What Do Women Want? I felt very prepared. Dan Savage is someone that I’ve heard of but didn’t really know much about. My friend had told me about his sex podcast, and I’d heard about his books. I’d definitely heard of the “It Gets Better” program, too, but I can’t say for sure […]

Sex Ed 101

June 15, 2014 by Sophia 1 Comment

Like many of the books I read, I think I first saw What Do Women Want? Adventures in the Science of Female Desire (2013) by Daniel Bergner on the Cannonball site. Immediately intrigued by the subject matter, I put it on my list. The full title gives a pretty good idea of what to expect when you read this book, but I will try to sum up Bergner’s main points. Evolutionary theory has been used to teach us that men are more aggressive and promiscuous […]

A look into the mind of a single guy

June 15, 2014 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I promised myself I wouldn’t do this again, that I would not get behind in writing up my reviews. Yet somehow it’s happened again. Oh well, perhaps someday my willpower will live up to my unrealistic expectations. Although I’ve seen “High Fidelity” with John Cusack, it was awhile ago and I barely remembered it. I probably wouldn’t have picked up High Fidelity–the book (1995) by Nick Hornby except that it was the most recent choice of my book club. I had mixed feelings about this […]

A Woman’s Life Through Poetry

May 30, 2014 by Sophia Leave a Comment

When I saw a clip of Caroline Kennedy on the Colbert Report discussing a book of poetry that she’d put together, I decided I needed to read it. In her introduction, Kennedy describes the book as “an anthology of poems centered around the stages of a woman’s life.” In it, she has managed to gather a good number of poems from a vast array of sources, including: Rainer Maria Rilke, Sylvia Plath, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Shakespeare, Margaret Atwood, the Bible, and many others. This book […]
