The Emperor’s New Groove

April 10, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

So I bought a new bookmark right before I started this, but I never even used it once. Just read this sucker straight through. What is this guy’s brain. Honestly, I’m trying to think of a reason NOT to give this five stars, and I can’t? Help. It really and truly does not compute in my head how Brandon Sanderson is able to keep inventing these really awesome, really well thought out magic systems, and on top of all that, still give us great characters, […]

Space Rapunzel is a socially mal-adjusted hacker and I love her.

“When she was just a child, the witch locked her away in a tower that had neither doors nor stairs.” Guys, I can’t give out another five star rating this year. I just can’t. But I almost did with this anyway. It was THISCLOSE. I’m going with 4.5 stars for now, but I reserve the right to change my mind upon re-read. I just really really enjoyed myself while reading this, probably more than I should have. Cress, the third volume of The Lunar Chronicles, is […]

Yet another disappointing third book in a YA dystopian trilogy.

March 27, 2014 by narfna 15 Comments

I am exhausted from being yo-yoed around by this book. Up and down and back around. I was prepared for disappointment after Prodigy and the way the series seemed to be heading, but even so I was still disappointed even over that prior disappointment. The ending to this series has cemented my resolve not to start YA series without 1) High recommendations from people I trust, and 2) Having a pretty good idea that the series isn’t going to careen off a cliff at the […]

Scary magic. Bad Fairies. Wolf people. DEAD BABIES.

March 26, 2014 by narfna 3 Comments

I want to preface this by stating that I reallly wanted to love this book — I used to work at the cafe where Janni wrote I’m sure a large portion of this very book. I served her coffee at least once a week for probably four years. I didn’t realize she was an author, however, until after I had already left that job. I also sat in on a panel she gave at the Tucson Festival of Books last weekend before I’d had a […]

1,088 pages of AWESOME.

I don’t know how I could respond to this with anything less than five stars. I feel like I’ve just emerged from a hurricane or something (a fitting image, in the circumstances). I’ve decided not to worry too much about the content of this review. I could never fully convey the experience of reading this book, or the way it played on my emotions just as strongly as it played on the part of me that likes a mental challenge. Any attempt to explain the plot and how […]

“O help / Me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, / Thou art / Mine only hope.”

March 19, 2014 by narfna 2 Comments

Holy shit. This is one of the nerdiest books I’ve ever read. It is glorious. I was initially wary of yet another book that seemingly capitalized on mish-mashing two beloved cultural entities together (see: the shitstorm surrounding the release of Pride & Prejudice & Zombies), but a good review by someone I trust convinced me to give this a shot. So glad I did. Shakespeare and Star Wars, it turns out, go absurdly well together. Like cheese and crackers, cookies and milk, pizza and beer […]

I think there is more visibility for stories with older and middle aged women. I’m here for it.

I'm really enjoying what feels like an increase in good stories about middle aged women. Maybe they just didn't come...
