Review #6: Slow burn, but what for?

Age of Ash by Daniel Abraham

December 27, 2023 by Monty 7 Comments

This is the latest series from one-half of the writers of “The Expanse” books (those under the pen name James S.A. Corey, with Age of Ash being published under the name Daniel Abraham). My partner picked it up because of his deep love of The Expanse, but I stole it and read it before him, and unfortunately ended up influencing his opinion on whether to read it or not. Publisher’s description: “Kithamar is a center of trade and wealth, an ancient city with a long, […]

Can I skip from book 1 to book 4 and just see how it ends?

April 15, 2018 by Bothari43 1 Comment

This book is written by half of the author team that Voltrons into James S.A. Corey. Unfortunately, that means my expectations going into it were VERY high. It was an absolutely fine book, but A of all, it was fantasy, not sci-fi as the recommender claimed; and second of B, it was pretty standard fare for fantasy. In this fantasy land, poets hold the highest honor in the land, because they can capture concepts and give them form and volition. Once captured, though, the anthropomorphized […]

I wish I liked this series more.

I feel like the time for me to realize this series wasn’t for me was back after book one or two, but I can’t quit now because I only have ONE book left and that would sit in the back of my brain gnawing with tiny teeth for the rest of my life, so I must finish this series even though I already know it’s not for me. So. Take my review with a grain of mountain-sized salt. I still can’t figure out why this […]

Why aren’t you guys reading this series?

“That’s the problem with things you can’t do twice,” Naomi said. “You can’t ever know how it would have gone if it had been the other way.” “No. But you can say that if you don’t do something different it’ll happen again, and again, and again, over and over until something changes the game.” “Like the protomolecule?” “It didn’t change anything,” Holden said. “Here we are, still doing all the same things we did before. We’ve got a bigger battleground. Some of the sides have shifted […]

Better, but still not quite there.

December 31, 2014 by narfna 2 Comments

I liked this better than the first one, especially at the end. This was bound to happen since I’m spending so much time with these characters, and Abraham is a consistent, talented writer. The first half continued a lot of the issues I had with the first book, though, so I can’t really give this four stars. Maybe the third book will earn it? It’s been a little over a year since the start of the series. Geder Palliako has gone from social pariah to […]

Amazing potential, disappointing execution.

November 4, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

I didn’t go in to this book expecting to be disappointed (quite the opposite, in fact). It just worked out that way. Firstly, The Dragon’s Path is the first in a five book epic fantasy series. It’s a multiple POV novel, in the style of GRRM, although with only four POV characters instead of who knows how many at this point. The four characters are Dawson Kalliam (a noble who gets embroiled in political intrigue of the court), Cithrin Belsarcour (a young orphan raised as a ward […]
