I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. What happened to the Hollow girls?

House of Hollow by Kristin Sutherland

December 22, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I remember seeing this a few years ago when it came out and thinking it sounded interesting but being on the fence about whether to read it. It was on sale recently so I immediately picked it up. While this is horror, it’s more on the eery/creepy side of the genre than incredibly scary. The Hollow sisters disappeared ten years ago for 30 days, but didn’t remember anything about where they had been or what had happened when they returned. Since then, there have been […]

A bit uneven but the sections that work are so illuminating

Poets Square by Courtney Gustafson

December 21, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I saw this because another Cannonballer reviewed it and thought it sounded interesting, especially since I fostered kittens last year (due to personal circumstances wasn’t able to this year but hopefully I will again soon). It’s a memoir of someone who moved into a house that had a large feral cat colony nearby, and she quickly found herself deeper and deeper into cat rescue and trap and release, helped by the internet and a few viral moments. While I was mostly interested in the cat […]

Two writers and only one famous figure to interview

Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry

December 21, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This is one of those novels that I quite enjoyed but also didn’t really have anything to say about so I simply kept pushing the review off. As far as Emily Henry novels go, this one falls into the top half of them for me, maybe even top 3. It has a slightly different approach than her previous novels since it also has quite a few flashbacks: our main character Alice is interviewing famous tragic heiress Margaret Ives, trying to get the opportunity to tell […]

The Strength of the Few by James Islington

December 16, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

The Will of the Many was one of my favorite reads earlier this year and led to me reading Islington’s Licanius trilogy. Since I had waited a bit to read The Will of the Many, it meant my wait for the second novel was relatively short, with it being out in November. I don’t want to get too deep into the details – there is a lot going on! Overall, I quite enjoyed it but don’t think it was quite as strong as the first […]

A Tale of Two Realms

A Far Better Thing by H.G. Parry

December 16, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I have never actually read A Tale of Two Cities beyond the famous opening paragraph and yet I was very much interested in a retelling with Fae. I’ve read a few novels this year that were either retellings or inspired by other classic texts but they were looser, taking those bones and putting them in a modern setting or otherwise being more homage than retelling. From what I can tell, this one takes the approach of following one of the supporting characters of the original […]

I can’t get Matt Damon’s voice out of my head

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

December 16, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I haven’t read Andy Weir since The Martian came out – I enjoyed it but I remember the reviews of Artemis were a bit lukewarm and with so many other novels to read, I wasn’t in a rush. But then there was a movie preview for the adaption of Project Hail Mary, his third novel, so I figured why not (I read with my eyes but I have heard that the audiobook version is great, narrated by Ray Porter – for some reason every time […]
