Why can’t we save all the cats?

Poets Square by Courtney Gustafson

I worked at a local cat rescue for about six months. I wanted a volunteer job, and this cute spot called Community Cats was right around the corner from me, so I signed up. My limited schedule meant I could only take a mid-Sunday shift, which meant less quality cat time and more laundry and mopping. Still, it was nice to give back to my favorite felines and get to know the quirky ladies who cared for them. As time went on, I realized I […]

“Feral, for all the wildness it implies, just means that an animal was abandoned by the system that created it.”

Poets Square: a Memoir in Thirty Cats by Courtney Gustafson

A bit uneven but the sections that work are so illuminating

Poets Square by Courtney Gustafson

I saw this because another Cannonballer reviewed it and thought it sounded interesting, especially since I fostered kittens last year (due to personal circumstances wasn’t able to this year but hopefully I will again soon). It’s a memoir of someone who moved into a house that had a large feral cat colony nearby, and she quickly found herself deeper and deeper into cat rescue and trap and release, helped by the internet and a few viral moments. While I was mostly interested in the cat […]

A Memoir about More than Just Cats

Poets Square: A Memoir in Thirty Cats by Courtney Gustafson

April 21, 2025 by Tracy 1 Comment

This was a great memoir. Author Courtey Gustafson and her partner Tim move into Poets Square, a house they’re renting in Tucson, Arizona, and soon realize that there are 30 feral cats on the property. This starts Gustafson on a journey that becomes so much bigger than just taking care of the cats on the property. That’s how it starts, though, with Gustafson doing her best to feed that cats on a limited budget and worrying about their wellbeing because there are significant limits to […]
