I like to think of myself as an effective employee, but I don’t know how I would be as an entrepreneur or salesman. Books like Quiet have confirmed that introverts can be successful in business, but certainly it can be more difficult for someone like me than Wolf of Wall Street’s Jordan Belfort. Still, I have some books and services that I would like to get into the world and I know I won’t get anywhere if I don’t try. Danny Iny’s The Audience Revolution […]

Hail, Hail, the Gang’s All Here!

April 7, 2015 by Halbs Leave a Comment

A year or two I got back into comic books, and spent many a Saturday morning browsing garage sales and used book stores for anything that tickled my proverbial fancy. I bought a sealed grab bag of comics (gambling for collectors) and opened it up to find a few stray issues of Camelot 3000, a 1980s maxi-series written by Mike Barr and illustrated by Brian Bolland of The Killing Joke fame. The comic looked bananas, so in my weekly trips to the used book stores […]

Who fears the wolf should never enter the forest.

When he wasn’t busy writing some of the world’s finest classic literature, Fyodor Dostoyevsky was busy touring European gambling halls. Like many gamblers, he lost a lot of francs. And, like many gamblers, he seemed to love riding the edge of luck and ruin. In fact, The Gambler was written as the result of a bizarre wager in which Dostoyevsky promised someone that if he didn’t deliver a novel by a date certain, that person would have the right to publish Dostoyevsky’s novels for nine […]

Celebrity Hero Gossip

Superman/Wonder Woman Vol. 1: Power Couple collects the first several issues of DC’s ongoing Superman/Wonder Woman series. This is another Charles Soule book; the man seems to be writing every major book that Mark Waid is not writing. I would ask how he does it, but he is a lawyer and hard-charging, self-doubting Type As love to take on more than they should so that makes sense. In a way, that’s one of the themes of this book. In this book, Superman and Wonder Woman […]

“A feel-good beach read!” – Werner Herzog

March 22, 2015 by Halbs 4 Comments

While I collect comics as a hobby, I don’t necessarily have every lauded book on my monthly pull list at my friendly neighborhood comic shop. I tend to go for less hero-y, off-the-beaten-path books like Alex + Ada, Letter 44, She-Hulk, or Gotham by Midnight. My all-time favorite series (right now) is Booster Gold, which is pretty fun and light-hearted. But, since everyone has been talking up Archie books lately, particularly Afterlife with Archie, I decided to pick up the first volume, Escape from Riverdale. […]

Go West

When most people think of comic books, they probably think of DC and Marvel. The Big Two have given us Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Avengers, X-Men, etc. For my money, though, Image is publishing the best regular series of books. I find myself recommending their their titles more than anyone else’s. Alex + Ada, Lazarus, Morning Glories, and Velvet are a few of my favorites. Image also compiles the first few issue of series in trade paperbacks format for $10, just to give you a […]
