Books have been a part of my life from a very young age . I'm currently being ruled over by 3 cats (Rafferty, Bodhi Rook & Yersinia Pestis), who I can mostly get not to chew on book covers. Lately, I'll read anything, though Science Fiction and Romance will always be on the bottom of the pile.

bjornsnipe's Reviews:

“Like the old Shadowhunter motto says, “Shadowhunters: That Evil Demon Stuff Is What We Are Here For.” But in Latin, probably.”

Secrets of Blackthorn Hall: An Illustrated Shadowhunter Novel by Cassandra Clare; ilustrated by Cassandra Jean

May 2, 2026 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

When the Blackthorn great-aunt dies, to the surprise of everyone she leaves her house in England to Julian, with the proviso he has five years to fix it up before ownership reverts to the Clave. So off Julian and Emma go to merry old England, to deal with large spiders, piles of dust, gnome contractors, and the ghost that is apparently tethered to the house. Can they solve the mystery and free the ghost, or will they be buried around all the secrets that lurk […]

Sleight of Hand: An Alewives of Colmar Mystery (#2) by Elizabeth R. Andersen

May 2, 2026 by bjornsnipe 2 Comments

It is now 1354, and in the Alsatian village of Colmar Efi, Appel, and Grita’s ale business is going extremely prosperously: that is until Efi founds a hand in their ale cauldron; a hand without a body. A hand that apparently belongs to someone from Vogelgrun, a village quite a distance from Colmar. As the three alewives fight to keep suspicion from falling on them (and possibly dooming their business), they have questions to answer: how did the hand wind up here? Where is the […]

“Life isn’t easy, no matter where you are. You’ll make choices you think are right, and then suffer for them.”

The Assassin’s Blade: The Throne of Glass Novellas by Sarah J. Maas

May 2, 2026 by bjornsnipe 2 Comments

And mine was reading this book. Years and years ago, I saw I saw a copy of A Throne of Glass in a bookstore. I didn’t buy it then, but I remembered that I wanted to get it sometime, so I (foolishly) asked for the box set of the complete series a while ago. And then I discovered that this was the prequel . So I had to read this, before I could read A Throne of Glass, before I could see if I tolerated […]

“The Church, like the monarchy, was a valuable bastion of defense against the dangerous alliance of atheistical philosophy with political radicalism. The Bible taught the poorer orders that their lowly path had been allotted to them by the hand of God, and the Church was there to make quite certain they understood that.”

Chaos Choreography: An Incryptid Novel (#5) by Seanan McGuire

April 25, 2026 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Verity Price and her ex-Covenant husband Dominic are back on the West Coast again and right back in the family business: cryptozoology.  Saving people from Cryptids (and more importantly, Cryptids from people), Verity figures her days of competitive ballroom dancing are over…aren’t they? But that’s before Verity gets the call from Dance or Die, the reality show she came in second on years ago, and realizes that she hasn’t quite put her alter-ego Valerie Pryor to bed yet. So she and Dominic are off to […]

“For as long as the axe has been in our hands, we have used it to kill.”

Whack Job: A History of Axe Murder by Rachel McCarthy James

April 12, 2026 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Much like the wheel, the boat, and the telephone, the axe is a transformative piece of technology—one that has been with us since prehistory. (I did not know we had telephones in prehistory, but hey-you learn something new everyday.) And to this day, even if its everyday use has been supplanted by newer technology, the axe is used as a murder weapon. From the first axe over a half a million years ago, to Lizzie Borden, to So I Married An Axe Murderer, Rachel McCarthy […]
