Well, it’s certainly no Bridgerton.

April 25, 2026 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

When the young wife of an aging marquis is found stabbed to death in the Prince Regent’s arms, the matter must be solved discreetly. Sebastian St. Cyr, sole surviving son of Count Devlin has no idea why he has been asked to investigate; he doesn’t really know the Prince Regent, and he said after the last invesstigation he had no desire to solve another. That is before he spies the necklace around the corpse’s throat; a necklace said to have been given to a Druid […]

The Hanged Man: Murder and Tarot

Who Will Remember by C.S. Harris

April 20, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This is the 20th novel in the series about a crime solving nobleman in Regency England, and the series continues to go strong. This one is more of a straight up murder mystery – some of the middle novels in the series got a bit wrapped up in French espionage story lines. I would even say this one would actually even be approachable to someone that hadn’t read any other novels in the series – of course, you’d be missing some of the complexity of […]

And So It Begins

What Angels Fear by C.S. Harris

July 4, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

#CBR11 Book Bingo: And So It Begins From Goodreads, because it’s nearly three months since I finished this baby: It’s 1811, and the threat of revolution haunts the upper classes of King George III’s England. Then a beautiful young woman is found raped and savagely murdered on the altar steps of an ancient church near Westminster Abbey. A dueling pistol discovered at the scene and the damning testimony of a witness both point to one man, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, a brilliant young nobleman […]

More action hero-y than your usual Regency stuff

December 5, 2018 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

This is a fairly fluffy (but not to the level of ‘cozy,’ I don’t think) mystery, the first in a series and a pretty good set-up for more. Rachel York, an actress in 1800s London is brutally murdered, one of Sebastian St. Cyr’s dueling pistols is found on the scene, and “St. Cyr” is written in Rachel’s daily planner for the evening she died. Sebastian, a war vet and local nobleman, decides that rather than let himself be arrested, it’s better to steal a carriage, […]

And Now I Have to Wait for the Next One …

May 28, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I am all caught up on the Sebastian St. Cyr series, and I am so disappointed now!  All the novels in the series are good with so many densely plotted mysteries, interesting recurring characters and a compelling plot line that runs through the series.  Still, I admit to starting to feel less drawn into the novels at some point in the middle, only for the last three to completely suck me back into the series. And now come the minor spoilers for previous novels in […]

I Probably Shouldn’t Like A Novel Involving a Serial Killer This Much

May 28, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Once Sebastian St. Cyr starts investigating a new case, he discovers street children have been disappearing for years but no one has noticed because they are at the edges of society, and its most vulnerable members.  The fact that a novel about the early 19th century and its treatment of the poor, and most especially poor children, still feels relevant today is rather condemning. Of course, to paraphrase a scholarly article I barely remember, historical fiction and sci-fi are both genres that tend to say […]
