“Life isn’t easy, no matter where you are. You’ll make choices you think are right, and then suffer for them.”

The Assassin’s Blade: The Throne of Glass Novellas by Sarah J. Maas

May 2, 2026 by bjornsnipe 2 Comments

And mine was reading this book. Years and years ago, I saw I saw a copy of A Throne of Glass in a bookstore. I didn’t buy it then, but I remembered that I wanted to get it sometime, so I (foolishly) asked for the box set of the complete series a while ago. And then I discovered that this was the prequel . So I had to read this, before I could read A Throne of Glass, before I could see if I tolerated […]

I became a SJM fangirl with A Court of Mist and Fury. I’d read A Court of Thorns and Roses and thought it was decent “girl fantasy” – by which I meant the main protagonist was a young woman and the main plot revolved around a love story (now we’re calling it “romantasy” which I love and loathe in equal measures) – but nothing too amazing. Then Mist and Fury came out and I was hooked. I loved how Maas handled Feyre’s trauma, depression, and […]

Not on the bandwagon for this series

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

May 30, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Throne of Glass sounded promising and it’s been on my list for a while. I finally picked it up; it starts off well, but then it seems to forget about the actual plot and focuses on the romantic possibilities of the incredibly obvious possible triangle between Celaena, Chaol, and Dorian, and the courtly scheming, mostly by two totally underdeveloped characters who might actually rather deserve each other. There is some supernatural evil looming in the background the whole time, but that too is pretty predictable […]

This book is definitely extra.

Kingdom of Ash (Throne of Glass, #7) by Sarah J. Maas

I have so many THOUGHTS about this book that I am going to go the other route and only hit the highlights. I am already ten reviews behind and I’m not going to have time today to write them all, so I might honestly have to declare REVIEW AMNESTY and start fresh in the new year. (Although there are some books I really want to actually review.) Here are my thoughts in no particular order: This book was TOO LONG. 992 pages is about two […]

A rollercoaster of frustration, eyerolling, and morbid curiosity

May 8, 2018 by Aquillia 7 Comments

One of my goals this year is to read more fantasy by female authors. I will not declare this to be an exclusive goal (if the next Martin or Rothfuss or Lynch or Staveley novel is punished I will devour it with no guilt whatsoever). But as a woman trying to write fantasy, I want to see more what is being published by my female peers. This also may lead to less obnoxious grim-dark fantasy, which sounds great to me. My reading choices are also […]

Is She Just Going to Get a New Potential Love Interest Each Book?

February 21, 2018 by Quorren 2 Comments

Why does Empire Strike Back work so well? Because each side story that one of the main characters is on is interesting and well-thought out. If Luke had gone to Dagobah and Han and Leia stayed brooding on the Falcon and moping about Luke being gone, and then there was a random story about a previously unknown Sith lord hanging out with his mean Stormtrooper friends, there would be no international phenomenon today. Anyways, this long and drawn out metaphor is how I feel about […]
